Event description

Description

Calling on all Terry Pratchett enthusiasts and everyone with an interest in Wikipedia!

The Library is in the process of cataloguing a comprehensive collection of Terry Pratchett works: varying editions, translations, and adaptations in print and offline digital media. In anticipation of this modern treasure-trove becoming available for consultation, we turn our gaze to the go-to place for information: Wikipedia. Could one of the first outputs of having this wonderful collection at our doorstep be some improvements to the coverage of the Pratchett opus in Wikipedia?

Wikipedia has become part of academic teaching, learning and research, though it might be hidden as the starting point of deeper engagement with a subject. Lecturers, students and librarians are increasingly interested in helping to make Wikipedia a reliable resource, by learning how to edit pages and by adding extra references to improve articles (for example, as part of 1Lib1Ref). Following our successful Wikipedia editing workshop in March, hooked on the 50th anniversary of the Berkeley Library building, the Library is delighted to offer another opportunity to learn the relevant skills - this time hooked on the fantastic worlds of Terry Pratchett!

Venue

South Training Room, Berkeley Library

Activity

This editing workshop is a hands-on event in which participants can learn how to start editing Wikipedia with the help of a trained and experienced Wikipedia editor. From setting up an account, to learning the anatomy of the good article, participants will be given the skills to add to and better understand one of the world's largest and most consulted online repositories of knowledge.

The workshop will also introduce how Wikipedia can be used in the classroom, and the existing support structures that educators and librarians can use. Platforms, such as the Programs and Events Dashboard, provide an online space in which educators and students can view their own contributions as well as those of others. Finally, the workshop will touch on a range of related areas, such as Creative Commons licensing, Wikimedia Commons, and collaborative initiatives such as the Wikipedian in residence.

The workshop will take the form of three sections: firstly an introduction to Wikipedia, followed by a hands-on workshop on the basics of Wikipedia editing, finishing up with an exploration of a range of academic initiatives.

During the practical part of the workshop participants will target a range of pages related to Terry Pratchett's works; you will be directed to reliable sources for additional information suitable for enhancing (in small ways) the content of these pages.

Participants will sit at PC workstations in the Berkeley Library's South Training Room; however feel free to bring your laptop if it is set up on the College Wi-Fi network or the Eduroam service. Some refreshments will be provided.

How to Prepare

  1. Register here on Eventbrite.
  2. CREATE A WIKIPEDIA ACCOUNT (if you don't already have one).

Please set up an account before the event if at all possible. Very few details are needed: a username, password, and we recommend giving your email, if only to be reminded of your password when you forget it. The short Wikipedia:Tutorial/Registration explains why this is a good idea.

If you like, you can also learn a little about editing ahead of time here: Wikipedia:Tutorial, or see Getting started on Wikipedia for more information.
