Event description

Experience Dublin on an interactive sonic bike as part of our current exhibition SOUND CHECK. Book in for a free sonic bike experience.

Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for visitors as they ride 'sonic bikes' along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering heroin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.

The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.

Ya slip ta bang is the first collaboration between London-based composer Kaffe Matthews and author Mia Gallagher. The text is from Mia’s debut novel HellFire. See here for more information about the artists Kaffe Matthews and Mia Gallagher.

Please note that bikes will not be issued to visitors if it is raining. We apologise for any inconveniences this may cause - the bikes were not designed with Irish weather in mind!

What happens if it’s raining?

If it is raining at all, the bikes will not be issued to visitors. If it is raining, there is no need to turn up for your booking. If you are unsure if your booking will go ahead due to weather conditions, please email Science Gallery Dublin at to check. If the booking can’t go ahead due to weather conditions you may re-book the following Monday.

Do I need to book a bike in advance of my visit to Science Gallery Dublin?

We strongly recommend pre-booking as there is a high demand for the tour. If you come to the gallery without pre-booking we can not guarantee any of the bikes will be available.

How much does the experience cost?

It’s free. However you will need to leave a non-monetary deposit (such as a credit card, car keys, or a government issued photo ID such as a passport or a driver’s licence).

Do I need to sign any forms?

Yes, you will need to sign a loan form when you arrive for your booking at Science Gallery Dublin.

Are there minimum age requirements to hire the bike?

Yes, you must be 15 years or older. Please bring an ID with you. For 15 to 17-year-olds, please have your parent or guardian print and fill out a consent form before you arrive at Science Gallery. Click here to download the consent form.

What is included in the bike hire?

The bike hire includes a sonic bike with a bell, front and rear lights, safety equipment, a safety briefing, a map and advice from our mediator staff.

Where do I pick up the bike?

You will pick up the bike on the ground floor of Science Gallery Dublin from a mediator stationed at the Sonic Bike exhibit.

How long does the tour last?

It depends on your chosen route, with the short taking 30 minutes and the longer route taking roughly an hour. Bikes should be returned within an hour to where you picked them up at Science Gallery Dublin.

Will there be a tour guide?

No. You will be provided with a map. You will be briefed by a mediator on using the bike and the route.

What time do I arrive at for my booking?

Please arrive five minutes early.

What happens if I’m late?

If you are over 15 minutes late for your booking, the bike will be offered to another visitor.

What if I can’t attend and need to re-book a time-slot?

If you can’t attend, please cancel your booking through Eventbrite as early as possible, and rebook for a later date that suits you better. Bookings are released on a weekly basis each Monday.

What clothing should I wear for the tour?

As this is a bike tour, you should wear comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, and suitable footwear. You will not be allowed on the bike with heeled footwear or long flowing materials that could get caught in the spokes. Please do not bring excess baggage with you as there are no facilities at Science Gallery where your bags can be stored.
