ZERO WASTE LIVING TALK BY TIMI NICHOLSON

Climate change, plastic pollution, loss of species and the precious natural world... Have you ever wondered what you can do to help? Well, we can each make a difference with our own choices and starting with small steps in the right direction is the way to go!

Timi and her husband's 'zero waste journey' started after their son, Max was born. They were astonished by the amount of disposable nappies they had to throw away every day. Soon after transitioning to cloth nappies, they got rid of all disposable products in their house, and 9 months down the line, they were able to completely unsubscribe from bin services to their home. Since then she has been featured in major publications such as Irish Times, the Irish Examiner and Greennews.ie.

According to Timi "Living a Zero Waste Lifestyle does not have to be difficult or extremely expensive. It can be the opposite. Aspiring to live a simpler life, stepping away from the consumerist throwaway society has lots of benefits that will also have a positive affect on your wallet."

In this exciting and interesting talk, Timi will share how she has transformed her life by adopting a Zero Waste Lifestyle & how and why you can do it also. She will share simple practical steps with us to start our own 'Zero Waste' adventures. There will also be Happy Pear kombucha and snacks available.

There are so many aspects to the waste we generate. We thought it would be relevant to share with you some waste facts for Ireland and the globe to set the scene and why it is important to pursue a more zero waste life:

- Over ⅓ of the food produced globally goes to waste and 1 million tonnes of food waste is produced in Ireland annually. That’s enough food waste to fill Croke Park two and a half times! Imagine that.

- Ireland is the top producer of plastic waste in Europe, generating an average of 61kgs per person every year (almost double what the UK produces).

- In total the amount of Ireland’s plastic production is nearly 300 million tons every year, half of which is for single use, before being thrown away.

- Only 9% of the 9 billion tonnes of plastic the world has ever produced has been recycled. Most ends up in landfills, dumps or in the environment. About 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into our oceans every year, harming biodiversity, economies and, potentially, our own health.

- Ireland’s current plastic recycling rate is 36%. The rest of our waste either goes to incineration and landfill. However, much of Ireland's plastic waste recycling has, until recently, been exported. For instance, China took 95% of Ireland’s plastic waste in 2016 until the Chinese ban on the importation of plastic waste from EU countries in 2018, which means that exporting plastic waste has been much more challenging.
