The Decameron Project - Hollywood
WHO WE ARE The Decameron Project – Hollywood
Shortly after the start of the pandemic in 2020, Director/Producer Kaz Matamura has been guiding a weekly gathering on Zoom of many of her creative associates to form The Decameron Project - Hollywood. Writers, actors and directors have been collaborating on short plays and films, which find a home on the Decameron Project Hollywood’s YouTube Channel. Kaz’s simple yet profound idea was to help her creative friends stay active, productive and engaged during the very uncertain months, and eventually years, of the pandemic. (The group’s name pays homage to 14th-century Italian author Boccaccio’s famous collection of tales - 100 stories told by 10 young people who shelter in a villa outside Florence in an attempt to escape the Black Death.)
A key long term goal of the Decameron Project was to prepare for the eventual return to live performances onstage. The idea for a One Minute Play Festival takes inspiration from festivals such as the U.K.’s highly successful Gi60 which has subsequently expanded to New York and Texas. The Decameron Project issued a request for submissions and received hundreds of one minute plays from around the globe. A selection of 60 of these plays will be produced in the Decameron Project Hollywood’s Inaugural One Minute Play Festival - Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13, 2023 at the Victory Center Theater in Burbank. This August 2023, the Decameron Project is producing an ambitious, live event of 60+ one minute plays by playwrights from throughout SoCal, the U.S. and around the globe. Performances will be filmed live and uploaded.
