DataKind Dublin

DataKindDUB

DataKind Dublin is one of 5 newly-hatched global chapters with the aim of extending the DataKind movement to the whole of Ireland. Before becoming DataKindDUB, Conor, Jon Sedar, Tim Carnus and Sam Whelan-Curtin had previously implemented DataKinds methods of their own volition to help the Irish charity Suas. Following their success with this charity they decided to apply to become one of DataKinds new global chapters. Out of 160 applicants worldwide, Dublin was successful alongside the considerably larger cities of San Francisco, Washington, Bangalore and Singapore.

Our First DataDive
As you already know we had our first DataDive event on 6/7 December - a 2-day weekend working session where we brought 70 eager data scientists together with 3 charities/NGO's (Suas, The Key and TASC) to deliver analytical & predictive insights on their data to help improve their organisation. We were delighted with how the event turned out, particularly for an inaugural event, and we got really positive feedback from all the parties involved. For some visuals on how it went it was well documented on our Twitter account which you can check out here

You can also check out our Irish Times Article printed in the build up to the event.

What we hope to achieve in 2015
We have proven our model of help charities with there data driven problem, but we have identified that different charities have different data needs. All Charities collect data to a degree, but our goal for 2015 is to help them understand the power of the information they have and what actions they can take to enhance there ability to deliver impact. Our volunteers are experts in there field, and are very keen to share their knowledge and skills for social good. Our accellerator night is to give charities an opportunity to share there problems with a set of experts and identify the next steps in solving them. It is about pragmatism and efficient use of both charities and volunteers time.
