The Heart Centre/Law and Justice
My name is Jane Mulcahy. I am a Research Fellow in Youth Justice with REPPP in the University of Limerick. I am, more importantly a lucky mom of two delightful children, as well as a wife, daughter, friend, colleague and former theatre-maker.
During my PhD in Law on long-sentence male prisoners, I discovered that undigested trauma was often at the root of the men's addiction, offending behaviour and other problems. To learn more about the impact of childhood trauma, which was not adequately addressed in mainstream criminological literature, I began reading widely across disciplines and undertook many wonderful trainings including with Dr Bessel van der Kolk, Dr Stephen Porges, Dr Karen Treisman, Dr Gabor Mate and Dr Frank Corrigan. I also learned a great deal from people with lived experiences of trauma in recent years.
Dr Sandy Bloom and Dr Christina Bethell state that we live in "a trauma-organized" world. I believe that this is true. We are all, to a greater or lesser extent, negatively effected by undigested trauma. In order to move towards individual, familial, collective and planetary health, integration and wholeness, we need to understand how trauma can manifest in children and adults and strive to become more patient, compassionate and attuned to those whose internal distress leads to so-called "challenging behaviours".
