The Book and The Body Symposia

Jessica Kennedy and Megan Kennedy of Junk Ensemble have curated a two-strand symposia entitled 'The Book and The Body' to take place in two universities in April 2018, partnering with University College Dublin School of English, Drama, Film and Creative Writing and National Univeristy of Ireland Galway Drama and Theatre Studies with support from The Arts Council, Dance Ireland and Dublin Dance Festival and curatorial support from Dr. Finola Cronin and Prof. Patrick Lonergan. The symposia is surrounding a new Junk Ensemble dance-theatre production, off-site work titled Dolores, to premiere in Dublin Dance Festival in May 2018. The Book and The Body Symposia is a free event (with the exception of the workshops) however booking is essential, and will comprise of workshops, a viewing of an open rehearsal by Junk Ensemble, panel presentations, a performance/lecture demonstration, roundtable discussions, an interview and international guest speakers. The symposia is centred around themes such as body & literature, gender & performance, sexuality and abuse in literature / performance / film industry etc., trauma & memory, how the body is represented in literature through the male perspective and Vladimir Nabokov’s novel ‘Lolita’. The symposia will take place at UCD and NUI Galway over two weekends.
