Walton Institute
South East Technological University (SETU) ICT research wing, Walton Institute of Information and Communication Systems Science, formerly Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG), is a major driver in the emergence of a telecommunications industry in the South East of Ireland. To date SETU has competitively secured over €17.93 million during the course of the H2020 funding programme, with €15.9 million of this competitively won by Walton Institute. Since the beginning of the H2020 programme in 2014, SETU has secured funding for 33 projects in the areas of biotechnology, smart agriculture, social sciences and ICT, of these 28 projects were secured by Walton, having a total project value of €188m and 11 of these were co-ordinated by Walton. Walton Institute also secured €513k via Open Calls.
Walton Institute has a proven track record in translating world class research into market-ready products and services and has enabled the establishment of an eco-system of mobile service companies in the South East of Ireland and beyond, creating several hundred jobs directly and indirectly in the last ten years.
Established 25 years ago, Walton Institute currently consists of over 80 research scientists and engineers; they have graduated over 25 PhD Students and manage an active international network in excess of 750 partners from industry, academic and research institutes worldwide. Walton Institute is also part of four SFI research centres that includes CONNECT, VistaMilk, LERO, and FutureNeuro.
Walton Institute’s research is spearheading the development of next-generation digital technologies that enable seamless tech-mediated interaction. Through engagement with cutting edge industries, Walton Institute is developing basic and applied technologies in an effort to realise impactful changes on the world of tomorrow. These fundamental concepts are been examined in healthcare, smart cities, transport, agri, cybersecurity and data storage.
The Technology Gateway, funded by Enterprise Ireland, is the commercial interface of the research institute. The aim of the Technology Gateway is to take the risk out of innovation for a company by researching, developing and validating scientific and technological solutions and rapidly bringing these to clients. Walton Institute’s unique value proposition is in simplifying the impact of complex and highly inter‐related thematic areas such as distributed & cloud-based mobile services, next generation IP-based voice and video, virtual and augmented reality services, smart space and social service enablers, data science, mining and analytics, user interface design (UI) and user experience (UX), real-time networking, machine learning. Walton Institute manages the often costly and time-consuming task of R&D for a company, allowing them to leverage new and emerging technologies and help them to position their product range at the leading edge.
In addition, Walton Institute has a dedicated software verification and validation group which can manage large scale integration and test from initial requirements through to final deployment.
