We That Swarm Among the Living and the Dead

Common Ground is an arts development organisation based in Inchicore, in one of the most historic and changing areas of Dublin’s south west inner city. Common Ground works across the communities of Inchicore, Rialto and Kilmainham.  It is an arts organisation that is about building a community with creativity at its core, that connects artists with the local people.

Assembling in the cemetery, we will gather with Mick on A L T A R for a reading of his essay, We that swarm among the living and the dead. Conversation follows, where together we can explore what places of death, that hold the bodies of our dead kindred, acknowledge.Mick Wilson is an artist, educator and researcher based in Gothenburg and Dublin. Mick was Dean of the Graduate School of Creative Arts &amp; Media, Ireland (2007-2012); Chair of the SHARE network of 40 higher arts education institutions across 30-plus countries He is currently Professor of Art, Director of Doctoral Studies at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, and co-chair of the Centre for Art and the Political Imaginary. Please note:This is an outdoor event so please dress for the weather and bring a torch.Participants are asked to remove their shoes when they gather on A L T A R.This event may be documented by film and still photography. The film will be screened and images used for publishing, press and social media. A L T A R is a site-responsive intervention for Goldenbridge Cemetery by artist Clodagh Emoe and architect Donal Lally. A L T A R explores how we, the living and the dead, are intrinsically connected with the natural world. A L T A R draws on the material and essence of plant life, creating a gathering space between the interior of the 18th-century Mortuary Chapel and the canopy of the ancient Beech Tree. A L T A R is funded by The Arts Council of Ireland and supported by Common Ground, Dublin Cemeteries Trust, NCAD and TUDublin.
