Reception organised by the School of Religion, Theology, and Peace Studies, the Trinity Centre for Biblical Studies, and the Loyola Institute to celebrate Mark Sweetnam’s Paul's Last Letter and Neil Morrison’s Retribution in Chronicles. <h4>About Sweetnam's Paul's Last Letter:</h4><h4> </h4>The Second Epistle to Timothy is, by any standard, a remarkable document. Even as the apostle urges his friend and coworker hasten to Rome for a final meeting, the intimacy and urgency of Paul's words make clear his awareness that Timothy might not arrive in time to say goodbye. This makes the epistle deeply personal. But Paul has a much larger purpose in view than just Timothy's consolation. The epistle vibrates with Paul's concern for Timothy's endurance in the apostle's mission after Paul's death. Paul is at pains to emphasize for Timothy the seriousness of his responsibility, the difficulty of the context in which that duty will be discharged, and the divine assistance that will allow him to preserve and transmit the apostolic deposit to 'faithful men'. Even as he addresses Timothy, Paul is deliberately speaking beyond him to everyone who remains faithful to the apostolic gospel in the 'last days' following the apostle's departure. This commentary provides a detailed but nontechnical treatment of 2 Timothy, which interacts with contemporary scholarship on the epistle, while providing a literary, rhetorical, and parenetic analysis of Paul's last letter.Mark Sweetnam is Lecturer in English with Digital Humanities in the School of English, Trinity College Dublin. He is a member of the Trinity Centre for Biblical Studies and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research interests lie in the areas of literature and theology (with a focus on the literature of the Reformation in England, Ireland, and Scotland) and the history of dispensationalism. About the book Retribution in Chronicles: Ideology and Reality:Neil J. Morrison seeks to clarify the nature and purpose of the theme of divine retribution in Chronicles. He contends that retribution represents a malleable motif which serves the ideological purpose of fostering religious commitment and bolstering the status of the Second Temple. Nevertheless, the outworking of retribution in the narrative has been constrained by other ideological commitments and the exigencies of the contemporary world. For example, the divine provision of the temple and God's irrevocable commitment to Israel often overshadow retribution. Similarly, the uncertainties of the late-Persian or early-Hellenistic setting necessitated a more flexible approach to retribution, underscoring the importance of human activity rather than waiting upon divine intervention. This theory explains how retribution serves a didactic purpose without representing a systematic theological dogma.Neil J.
