Greywood Arts (Residency for Artists)

this/OUR is a community deep mapping project exploring Glenbower Wood through art, history, ecology and citizen, led by artists Basil Al-Rawi, Chris Finnegan, Katie Nolan and Philip Ryan in partnership with Greywood Arts. Deep mapping is a transdisciplinary process that layers community voices, artistic interpretations, historical narratives, and ecological perspectives into a multidimensional narrative of place. This methodology, inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' short essay On Exactitude in Science, allows us to explore the tension between the precision in defining "THIS" place and the transient, relational nature of "OUR" connection to it. To launch the project, a series of “artists in conversation with” events will take place over Thursday 6th and Friday 7th of March at Greywood Arts with the project's mentors, Jonski Millar, Dr. Kevin O’ Sullivan and Dr. Cathy Fitzgerald.These events are free and all are welcome to attend. The third event of this series is with Dr Cathy Fitzgerald, an ecological creative practitioner and ecoliteracy educator who founded Haumea Ecoversity in 2019. This conversation with Cathy will focus on “Creativity, Community and Nature” and will reflect on the question “Who else lives here?” Cathy will draw on her extensive experience of ecological creative practice at Hollywood Forest and will discuss the importance of incorporating ecoliteracy, ecological ethics with the peoples Earth Charter, and the voices of community and the more-than-human world, into engaging longterm eco-creative practices. Cathy Fitzgerald is an experienced eco-social artist, ecoliteracy facilitator and researcher known for her innovative work in ecological forestry and education for eco-creative practices. Since 2008, her ongoing project, "The Hollywood Forest Story," has focused on transforming a conifer plantation in South Carlow into a biodiverse, permanent forest. Her work bridges ecological art practice and forestry, promoting new-to-Ireland continuous cover forestry, ecological literacy and agency for community engagement, with forests and wetlands. Fitzgerald's contributions include advocacy for forest policy, research on creativity’s role to foster ecological awareness and agency, and her PhD reviewing the challenges and potential of duration, embedded-in-place eco-social art practices. She has also developed courses and workshops on ecoliteracy for creative and cultural professionals and educators and founded Haumea Ecoversity in 2019. Cathy will be acting as a mentor in ecoliteracy for creative practice for the project. this/OUR is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland and Cork County Council
