Author Karl Geary and writer/director Maeve Stone join Roe McDermott to discuss whether Dublin city has become a gleaming glass and steel storage vault for capital and to ask who owns our cities. Is our city planning happening in Silicon Valley and if, because this makes it impossible for artists to survive here, we are being left with a monoculture meaning other voices, radical and progressive and profound, are left without a platform, or the ability to develop their own voice. Karl Geary is the author of two novels, Montpelier Parade was shortlisted for the Desmond Elliot prize, the Costa first novel award, and the Prix Femina, France. His second novel, the best selling Juno Loves Legs, was named as one of the Irish Times’ books of the year. He was born in Dublin. Maeve Stone is a director / writer for film and theatre whose work responds to issues of climate breakdown, and revisits the canon with a feminist lens. She has been working in embedded and socially engaged practice for the last 8 years and is keen to continue learning how the skills of a storyteller can impact climate resilience. In 2021 she co-founded a film and media company called Cracking Light Productions with her partner Alex Gill which is based in Co. Clare. Maeve is a member of the National Campaign For The Arts Steering committee since 2022.
