On the 50th anniversary of the independence of Cabo Verde, join us for a screening of The Return of Amílcar Cabral (30 min, 1976) by Djalma Fettermann, Flora Gomes, Jose Bolama, Josefina Crato, and Sana Na N’Hada and Cuba (10 min, 2013) by Filipa César.This film is being screened as part of the education programme in parallel with The Dream Pool Intervals, a solo exhibition of work by artist Ailbhe Ní Bhriain.This screening is programmed and presented by artist and filmmaker Helena Gouveia Monteiro, who will moderate a post-screening conversation....The Return of Amílcar Cabral, Djalma Fettermann, Flora Gomes, Jose Bolama, Josefina Crato, and Sana Na N’Hada (Guiné Bissau, 1976, 30min.) The first production by Guinean film-makers after the liberation from Portuguese colonialism in 1974, O Regresso de Amílcar Cabral documents the return of the remains of Amílcar Cabral from Conakry, where he was assassinated in January of 1973, to Bissau in 1976. An intriguing coverage of the solemn event is accompanied by recordings of Guinean songs and archive footage of Cabral speaking to freedom fighters during the guerrilla war, paying tribute to the political thinker and key figure of African liberation and anti-colonial struggle.Cuba, Filipa César (France, Portugal, Germany, 2013, 10 min.) A film essay based on Filipa César’s research on Guinea-Bissau’s recently digitized film archive proposes a path from Amílcar Cabral’s early experience as an agronomist researching the soil of the Portuguese village of Cuba to his engagement as a leader of the Guinean liberation movement and promoter of the birth of Guinean militant filmmaking influenced and supported by Cuba.Free, book via Eventbrite or come on the day subject to availability.
