Surviving or Thriving? Supporting wellbeing in the arts sector: Visual Art

Réalta is the national resource organisation dedicated to developing arts + health in Ireland. Through its national programme, Réalta delivers training; provides information, mentoring and advice; supports networking; engages policy makers to increase understanding and support for arts + health; and provides the encyclopaedic national resource website artsandhealth.ie.  At local level, Réalta delivers its extensive Waterford Healing Arts programme, which brings arts experiences - music, visual art, creative writing, storytelling - to the bedside of patients at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and other healthcare settings to promotes creativity, connection and discovery, and reduce isolation, anxiety and stress for patients, family members and staff. Core funded by the Arts Council and the HSE.

A graduate of the Belfast School of Art (2010), Kielt uses drawing and painting techniques that manipulate personal and found imagery to create alternate narratives. In 2015, Kielt was a finalist in the NI Young Artist of the Year award, and in 2018 he was among 13 recipients of the iDA Grant from the University of Atypical in Belfast, which is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. In 2019 and 2020, Kielt was highly commended in the MOTH Art Prize. Kielt has been included in multiple publications including The Visual Artists Ireland News Sheet, Occupy Paper and Tales from the Forest. He has appeared in several group shows, held five solo exhibitions and has work in a number of private collections in the UK, Republic of Ireland and the US. He is currently developing his practice from his studio in the Mid Ulster countryside. <a href="https://www.briankielt.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.briankielt.com</a> A graduate of Technological University, Dublin and the Institute of Art, Design &amp; Technology, Dublin (IADT) (Research Masters, 2011), Cork artist Miriam O’Connor draws inspiration from the language, sights and sounds of the everyday. She is curious about the multifaceted roles photography occupies in culture and the manner in which this persuasive medium permeates the way we engage with the world around us. Following her relocation to the family farm in recent years, O’Connor now occupies a dual role of farmer and photographer, where she is interested in engaging with the elasticity of this medium throughout everyday agricultural life. In recent times O’Connor was awarded the Visual Artists Ireland Experiment! Award (2020) and her long-term body of work, Tomorrow is Sunday was published in conjunction with A Woman’s Work by the Gallery of Photography Ireland (2020). A solo show of this work will take place at The Royal Hibernian Academy this year. O’Connor also lectures part-time at Griffith College Dublin. Her work is part of FUTURES, a photography platform that pools the resources and talent programmes of leading photography institutions across Europe, and A Woman’s Work, a project using photography and digital media to challenge the dominant view of gender and industry in Europe. <a href="https://miriamoconnor.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.miriamoconnor.com</a> Austin Ivers is an artist and educator. Currently lecturing in contemporary art at GMIT, Austin has also been a visiting lecturer at LSAD, Burren College of Art and the Huston School at NUIG. He has exhibited widely throughout Ireland, including at the RHA, 126, Live 8 and the Dock; in Europe in Graz, Kiev and Friedrichshafen; and in Philadelphia, USA. His writing has been published in the VAI Printed Project and Enclave Papers. Austin is currently working towards a new solo work in 2021. Surviving or Thriving? Arts Council and Waterford Healing Arts Trust announce innovative online series to support the wellbeing of the arts sector in IrelandThe Arts Council/An Comhairle Ealaíon and Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) have announced details of an innovative new online series designed to support the wellbeing of arts professionals in Ireland, with particular relevance to the present Covid-19 pandemic. Entitled Surviving or Thriving?, the series of panel discussions, workshops and podcasts, which is open to all those working in the arts in Ireland and is free of charge, aims to strengthen resilience, restore confidence and promote connectedness across the arts sector. The programme features panel exchanges chaired by psychologist Dr Maureen Gaffney, with guest speakers from a range of art forms, including writer Anne Enright, musician Eleanor McEvoy and artist Austin Ivers, in addition to follow-up workshops and online resources exploring self-care and wellbeing. Surviving or Thriving? takes place over three weeks from 15 March to 01 April 2021, with podcasts and other online resources available ongoing. Admission is free, but booking is required. Covid-19 has had a profound professional and personal impact on artists and arts workers, with major structural impacts for organisations. Artists and arts workers from across the arts sector in Ireland provided a myriad of real-life examples of the effect the pandemic has had on their wellbeing to the Arts Council for its report Survive Adapt Renew. Among its recommendations the report included commitments to building resilience, inclusion and sustainability in the sector as it faces into the future. Each element of Surviving or Thriving? seeks to inspire and support, while acknowledging current challenges and realities. Recognising the need to break through the saturation of online events available and to offer real value to the target audience of arts professionals, WHAT has been liaising with national and regional art form and development organisations who have offered their expertise and guidance in developing the programme and putting together a high calibre line up of speakers. These organisations include Music Network, Visual Artists Ireland, Theatre Forum, Words Ireland, Create, Age and Opportunity, Minding Creative Minds and Dance Limerick. Speaking at the announcement of details, Maureen Kennelly, Director of the Arts Council, said: “These past 12 months have been extraordinarily difficult for people across the arts landscape. Alongside their own cares and concerns for family and friends, they have been dealing with the shocking cessation of activity and the resulting loss of income.
