Mad, Bad and Dangerous is documentary series of interviews between influential Irish women over 70 . IWLA was delighted to come on board as one of the first main sponsors of the series so it’s great to continue our link to the project with this event.Mad, Bad and Dangerous: a celebration of ‘difficult’ women is a series of recorded conversations between Irish women in the public eye who are over 70 years of age which premiered online in September as part of Dublin Fringe Festival and in October as part of Age and Opportunity&#x27;s Bealtaine Festival AT HOME.Of the women featured in the 4-episode series some are artists, writers and film-makers, some are political leaders and cultural change-makers, some are human rights and environmental activists, sociologists and anthropologists, one has been shot and some have been jailed. These once-in a lifetime conversations between these women cannot be missed.Episode 1: Leila Doolan being interviewed by her friend Bernadette McAliskey, in public conversation for the first time since the premiere of Doolan’s 2011 award-winning film Bernadette: Notes On a Political Journey. Episode 2: Civil rights activist and film-maker and 5-time prison inmate Margaretta D’Arcy talks rings around Lelia Doolan.Episode 3: Video and performance artist Pauline Cummins in conversation with Jo Murphy-Lawless a Sociologist who has successfully campaigned for better maternity rights. Episode 4: Journalist and feminist Nell McCafferty talks to Lelia Doolan about her long and colourful career.Creator &amp; Director Emma O’Grady commented…“During this global pandemic, the relationship that intersects age, gender, and public space has never been so fraught. The need to see, listen, and prioritise older people has been rendered explicitly visible. This project seeks to redress this imbalance with urgency, care, respect, humour, and a bit of boldness. Mad, Bad and Dangerous: a celebration of ‘difficult’ women is a legacy project for all ages to hear the stories behind these trailblazing women. They were moving mountains long before hash-tags”.The title draws from the 1960s, when Archbishop John Charles McQuaid allegedly described Lelia Doolan as “mad, bad and dangerous” (a phrase originally coined by Lady Caroline Lamb about Lord Byron). In this series, these wonderfully ‘difficult’ women are the ones who broke the mould and challenged the limitations of life for women at a time when they were supposed to stay at home and stay quiet. Because of their achievements, intellect, battles, and compassion, Irish society a different place than t was to begin with. These women are not really difficult, they are extraordinary. They are not quiet nor invisible, and they will not tolerate unjust systems or ideas. So maybe these kinds of women are called difficult, but the real difficulty is the kind of society that tries to hide them away or diminish their capacity for change. These women are visionaries and leaders, and it’s time we sat down, shut up, and listened to what they have to say. She collaborates with people to create theatre, film, events and art works inspired by true events, real lives and shared histories. She believes in human creative potential. She believes we are vitally connected to that which has gone before us. She believes every person is deep and has big things to say. The work she creates celebrates duality, acknowledges multiple truths and encourages understanding and connection and that by sharing experiences we can change our world in profound, tiny ways. She was co-director of Mephisto Theatre with Caroline Lynch 2006-2014 and performed in most of their 26 productions. Her first play What Good is Looking Well When You&#x27;re Rotten on the Inside? - based on tapes recorded by her grandfather during the last month of his life - was produced to critical acclaim in 2017 and continues to tour. She has worked extensively in Ireland as a technician and production manager including with Macnas, Fit-Up Theatre Festival and Asylum.DR MIRIAM HAUGHTON	RESEARCH &amp; ASSOCIATE PRODUCERDr Miriam Haughton is Lecturer in Drama and Studies at NUI Galway and Vice-President of the Irish Society for Theatre Research. Miriam is the author of Staging Trauma: Bodies in Shadow (Palgrave, 2018) and co-editor of Legacies of the Magdalen Laundries (Manchester UP, 2021), Radical Contemporary Theatre Practices by Women in Ireland (Carysfort, 2015) and journal special issues Ilha Do Desterro (2018) and Irish Theatre International (2014). Her research has appeared in Contemporary Theatre Review, Modern Drama, New Theatre Quarterly, Mortality, and Irish Studies Review. Miriam established the Feminist Storytelling Network in 2017 and is a supporting member of the National Women’s Council of Ireland.LARA HICKEY 	PRODUCERLara Hickey is an award winning Irish film and theatre producer. Most recently Lara produced the award winning short films BAINNE directed by Jack Reynor and starring Will Poulter (WINNER Best First Short) in association with Sky Arts and Screen Ireland and CYNTHIA, directed by Jack Hickey and starring Clare Dunne and Moe Dunford (WINNER: Tiernan McBride Award Best Short Drama), which both premiered at the 31st Galway Film Fleadh and have gone on to screen at international festivals in Europe, the UK and the United States. BAINNE was recently broadcast on Sky Arts to celebrate St Patrick’s Day 2020 and has just been nominated for an IFTA for Best Short Film. She is Co-Director of Copper Alley Productions and Producer with THISISPOPBABY, Anabasis Films and is a founder and course co-director of X-POLLINATOR with Katie Holly, a professional development initiative for female creative talent, funded by the BAI, Screen Ireland, Screen Skills Ireland and Creative Europe. Her film &amp; television credits in development, production and production accounts include Element Pictures, BBC, RTÉ, Vico Films, Zodiak Media, Hail Mary Pictures, EON and NBC Universal.
