Leonard and Hungry Paul author Rónán Hession is joined by Dominic Campbell, arts officer for Irish Hospice Foundation, and Mary Shine Thompson, curator, educationalist and barrister, for a lunch long discussion on art and compassion.Does the arts bring us help when we are in need? Rónán Hession is the author of Leonard and Hungry Paul which has been nominated for several awards including Irish Novel of the Year and the British Book Award for Best Debut. Rónán has also been longlisted for the An Post Irish Book Awards for Short Story of the Year. His second novel Panenka will be published in May 2021.Mary Shine Thompson is the DCU Educational Trust’s representative on DCU Governing Authority. She qualified as a barrister in 2016 and is a board member of Restorative Justice Services. A second strand of her work relates to the promotion of the arts, especially as they intersect with education. In this capacity she is a board member of Fire Station Arts Studios and works with the DCU team to integrate visual arts into the life of the university. She has acted as literary and arts advisor / consultant for various state and non–state bodies. She is a former chair of Encountering the Arts Ireland, an alliance of arts-in-education organisations; of Poetry Ireland, the national organisation for poetry in Ireland; and of Imram, the national Irish-language literary festival. Until 2010 she was Dean of Research and Humanities at St Patrick’s College and lecturer in English.Dominic Campbell is establishing Irish Hospice Foundation’s arts programme, where making meaning is supported with creative practice and compassionate culture nurtured. A cultural producer, excited by the positive effects on society of longer lives he founded Creative Aging International, transformed Bealtaine, Earagail and St Patrick’s Festivals, and is an inaugural cohort of The Global Brain Health Institute and Atlantic Fellowship, a Next Avenue Key Influencer on Aging, and board member of Africa’s Arts in Medicine Fellowship
