Mother Tongues is a social enterprise working to promote multilingualism and intercultural dialogue in Ireland.Since our foundation in 2017 we have inspired many schools, libraries and community organisations to embrace multilingualism and act as catalysts for change, showing that Ireland welcomes all linguistic and cultural identities, and inspiring future generations of bilingual and multilingual children.Our goal is to inspire everyone in society to be open to linguistic and cultural diversity and value the benefits that multilingualism brings to individuals, communities and to our society as a whole. Children can reach their full potential by developing English alongside Irish and their family language, but to do so they need parents who are motivated to keep up their mother tongue, teachers who are positive about every language and a society that welcomes linguistic diversity in all its forms.This is why the projects we develop at Mother Tongues focus on children, by offering them opportunities to develop their language skills, parents, giving them the confidence to transmit their language to their children and teachers, enhancing their awareness of linguistically responsive practice. We work all over Ireland and collaborate with many organisations in the delivery of our programmes.

Celebrating successes and failures of language learning! (For adults 16+)

This one of a kind ‘ciorcal cómhrá’ will be facilitated by professional comedian Áine Gallagher, AKA Ireland’s only unqualified, non-fluent Irish teacher. It will be a fun, inclusive, bilingual workshop where people can practise speaking Irish or simply listen to Áine as she shares stories and introduces the true levels of ‘fluency’. For example, embarrassing yourself publicly. Áine will aim to encourage others by sharing personal examples, like the time she accidentally told her Irish speaking football team to ‘ride their players’ instead of ‘marking their players’. This workshop will provide a chance to practise while also celebrating our successes, failures and resilience when learning languages. Áine’s main mantra is that “Irish is for everyone”. So don’t fall into the trap and think this workshop is only for “good” or “fluent” Irish speakers. This workshop is for EVERYONE, even if you speak no Irish at all. Participants are invited to bring a picture that represents their “most surprising experience when speaking Irish”. This is purely voluntary. The pictures will be used to encourage participants to share their stories with the group if willing. About the facilitatorÁine Gallagher is an internationally acclaimed and award winning comedian, storyteller and community arts facilitator. Hailed as the &quot;queen of the offbeat&quot; she uses a unique style to promote the Irish language through humour and creates encouraging spaces for people to practise. Her work is celebrated internationally, with recent performances at festivals including; &quot;Féile na Gaeilge&quot; Canada and the &quot;International Irish Series&quot; in Berlin. Her short documentary &quot;Grá &amp; Eagla&quot; has achieved multiple international awards and she has been described by comedian Deirdre O&#x27;Kane as &quot;a fresh and exciting Irish act&quot;.
