WILIČE

Mother Tongues is a social enterprise working to promote multilingualism and intercultural dialogue in Ireland.Since our foundation in 2017 we have inspired many schools, libraries and community organisations to embrace multilingualism and act as catalysts for change, showing that Ireland welcomes all linguistic and cultural identities, and inspiring future generations of bilingual and multilingual children. Our goal is to inspire everyone in society to be open to linguistic and cultural diversity and value the benefits that multilingualism brings to individuals, communities and to our society as a whole. Children can reach their full potential by developing English alongside Irish and their family language, but to do so they need parents who are motivated to keep up their mother tongue, teachers who are positive about every language and a society that welcomes linguistic diversity in all its forms. This is why the projects we develop at Mother Tongues focus on children, by offering them opportunities to develop their language skills, parents, giving them the confidence to transmit their language to their children and teachers, enhancing their awareness of linguistically responsive practice. We work all over Ireland and collaborate with many organisations in the delivery of our programmes.

Mother Tongues

A Short Film By Barbara Knezevic & Alice Rekab

Unreliable Narrators
As unreliable narrators of multiple origins it is from this starting point that we composed this moving image work. Fitting somewhere in between a script, a catharsis, and a history lesson, this work takes its origins from imaginary topographies, partisan monuments, ancient fragments of domestic life and Irish, Syrian, Serbian, Croatian and West African folktales (real or fabricated). Wiliče is interested in the creative interpretation of provenance, tradition, and the other stories we tell ourselves about who we are, where we come from and where we are going.
Barbara Knežević
Barbara Knežević makes sculptural artworks, that appear as complex formations of objects including materials such as ceramics, stone, perspex, vegetation, fabric, textiles and screens featuring moving images. These art works can be more closely described as sculptural concentrations, an omnivorous selection of things acting together calling to mind familiar arrangements; film sets, photographic shoots, museum displays, retail displays and other staged arrangements of found and fabricated items. In these sculptural concentrations, items are arranged with attention to, though not always respecting museological conventions that make visible the hierarchies of value in material culture. These concentrated sculptural arrangements aim to distil and amplify the qualities and affect of the objects they display, through repeating and calling attention to texture, colour, opacity, pattern or other haptic, sensual qualities. Barbara Knežević’s work explores the potential for artworks to create affect, produce feeling, to induce wellbeing or to generate emotive and pleasurable states. Her artworks produce relayed intra-relations between objects, viewer, and space and propose the potential of artworks as zones for radical joyfulness and pleasure, and as ways to reimagine and reconsider ways of being.

Alice Rekab‘s practice is concerned with expressions and iterations of complex cultural and personal narratives. Alice Rekab takes their own mixed-race Irish identity as a starting point from which to explore experiences of race, place and belonging. Over the last ten years Alice Rekab’s practice has centred around collaboration and interdisciplinary work from which they produce film, performance, image and sculpture, creating new intersectional narratives and objects for exhibition.Projects include Ricochet #14, Museum Villa Stuck, Munich (2021); Two External Light Sources At The Same Time, Atrium, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios (2019); The Nomoli/Father talk, VERY Project Space, Berlin (2019) and The Open Object, Stanley Picker Gallery, London (2018). Alice Rekab is a recipient of the Visual Arts Bursary Award 2020.This event is part of the Mother Tongues Festival.
