In this Dublin Festival of History talk, author Rob Goodbody will discuss his recent publication Dublin's Industrial Heritage: From Sandymount Strand to Crumlin Road. The book was commissioned by the Dublin City Council Heritage Office and published by Wordwell Books, and was supported by Heritage Council grant funding.This work is the first in a three-volume series of richly illustrated books written for the general reader. Unpacking the history of Dublin’s industrial heritage down through the ages, each book covers a specific geographical area: Volume I, Dublin South-East; Volume II, Dublin South-West; Volume III, North Dublin city and suburbs. The series builds on the Dublin City Industrial Heritage Record, a desktop and fieldwork survey compiled by Dublin City Council between 2006 and 2009 (now available on heritagemaps.ie) with new research by the author. Industrial Heritage embraces the surviving evidence of society’s social, economic and technological development from the onset of industrialisation to the recent past. It shows how people have responded to technological change and to cycles of industrial growth and decline over time. This volume covers the industrial heritage of the South-East area of Dublin, exploring the now radically transformed south Docklands and key sites along the Dodder, the Poddle and Grand Canal, and sites in the south city centre, Ringsend, Sandymount, the Poolbeg Peninsula, Ballsbridge, Rathmines, Ranelagh, Milltown and Dartry, Clonskeagh and Harold’s Cross. AUTHORRob Goodbody is a building historian with a background in historical geography, geology, local history and building conservation. He was a founder member of both the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland and the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland. Over the years he has led many walks to the lead workings at Ballycorus, Glendalough and Glendasan and has delivered lectures to local interest groups, mining heritage organisations and conferences. This talk will be ISL interpreted (unless communicated otherwise) and the venue is wheelchair accessible.Please note photography and recording will be taking place for the purposes of social media and future viewing on our YouTube channel.
