Farming in Contemporary Irish Literature: a lecture by Prof. Nicholas Grene

Literature Ireland is the national organisation promoting Irish writing and writers internationally. It bringsthe finest of Irish literature in the best possible literary translations to readers around the world by awarding translation grants to publishers, by hosting literary translators in Ireland, and by representing Irish writers at international events, book fairs and festivals.

Farming in Contemporary Irish Literature is an innovative study which analyzes the range of representation of farming in Irish literature in the period since independence/partition in 1922, as Ireland moved from a largely agricultural to a developed urban society. In many different forms including poetry, drama, fiction, and autobiography, writers have made literary capital by looking back at their rural backgrounds, even where those may be a generation back. Particular consideration is given to the writings of John McGahern, Seamus Heaney and Patrick Kavanaugh.Nicholas Grene is Emeritus Professor of English Literature at Trinity College Dublin and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. His books include The Politics of Irish Drama (Cambridge University Press, 1999), Yeats&#x27;s Poetic Codes (Oxford University Press, 2008), Home on the Stage (Cambridge University Press, 2014), and The Theatre of Tom Murphy: Playwright Adventurer (Bloomsbury, 2017).Farming in Contemporary Irish Literature will be published on August 1, 2021 by Oxford University Press.
