Greenwood Stool Making

Nestled in the heart of Stoneybatter, Bi Urban is a unique creative studio, founded by artist environmentalist and healthcare design consultant Kaethe Burt-O’Dea. Kaethe has won numerous awards including the DIT Community Fellowship award (2010, 2012,2013) and Riba Award (2012).Most recently her work was recognised by Diageo when she won the Arthur Guinness Projects Award for the Lifeline project, a ‘living laboratory’ exploring the collaborative development of urban environments with community health and public engagement as a central tenet. In 2016 she established Bí URBAN, a studio for social creativity, prominently positioned on the main street of Stoneybatter to act as a hub for the development of this project.Bí URBAN represents the next stage of an ambitious 10-year-strategy to build the Lifeline, a nature corridor that will connect the Botanic Gardens with the Liffey, creating a ribbon of biodiversity and fertile ground for social innovation, green enterprise and nature-based solutions.

Learn traditional Irish woodworking techniques from master craftsman Feargus De Brún and come away with your own stool, handcrafted from Ash

These Workshops are held over 3 days, from 10 am to 5 pm with breaks for tea and lunch. There is a week-long gap between the first and second workshop to allow for drying of wooden parts prior to assembly.SEPTEMBER Workshop Two dates are:Sunday the 12thSaturday the 18thSunday the 19thSuitable for beginner&#x27;s and experienced craft enthusiasts of all ages.These stool making workshops are the most achievable entry into woodworking on offer.Each student will receive a log of Ash on day one which you will transform into a 4 legged stool with a hemp cord woven seat by the end of day 3. This will be achieved using hand tools alone.Feargus’s stool making workshop is an ideal starting point for anyone who aspires to become a professional woodworker or simply has an interest in experimenting with one of the world&#x27;s most versatile and sustainable materials. Feargus maintains his own coppicing woodland and makes exclusive use of sustainably harvested wood in his furniture making. This workshop provides a special opportunity to learn from his rich knowledge of Irish forests and their crucial role in achieving a carbon neutral society.In this workshop you will:<ul><li>Learn to split, store and dry green(high moisture) Ash logs.</li><li>Shave and carve legs and other components of the stool frame.</li><li>Discover seat weaving patterns skills using beautiful and robust hemp cord.</li><li>Learn about traditional joinery and assemble the frame of the stool using mortise and tenon joinery.</li><li>Gain an insight and experience with hand tools that have been engrained in our heritage for 1000&#x27;s of years.</li><li>Experience the radical simplicity of using a few hand tools to craft a stool from an Ash log, all in a noise free relaxed environment.</li></ul>PLEASE NOTE This event will take place in accordance with current COVID guidelines.
