22nd Medieval Dublin Symposium

The Dublin Festival of History is an annual free festival, brought to you by Dublin City Council, and organised by Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with the Dublin City Council Culture Company.

This symposium organised by the not-for-profit Friends of Medieval Dublin presents the latest research by scholars working on Dublin&#x27;s story from its earliest stages in the pre-Viking Age to its rebirth under the Tudors at the end of the Middle Ages. There are eight papers presented live online over the course of two consecutive half-days, including important new work by experts on medieval history and medieval artefacts and by archaeologists working on major excavations in Dublin. The speakers include the renowned economic historian Professor Bruce Campbell, who will present a new analysis of the makeup of the population of Anglo-Norman Dublin; Dr Patrick Wadden, who will re-examine the supposed invasion of Dublin by the Ostmen; Professor Eileen Murphy who will explain the evidence for leprosy in medieval Dublin using modern biomolecular science; and Dr Ruth Johnson who will present the results of an examination of the iconography of the neglected High Cross at Nethercross, Finglas. Alan Hayden recently directed major archaeological excavations near Dublin Castle at Chancery Lane and Ship St Great, and he will reveal his findings; Cathy Moore made important discoveries in the medieval riverfront at Strand St Great and Upper Abbey St, and she will explain their significance; while Maeve Tobin is conducting important osteoarchaeological research on a series of skeletons unearthed on the grounds of what was the great medieval abbey of St Thomas the Martyr, which we will also hear about on the day.
