The Westenra family had an interest in Traditional Irish Music and more specifically in the uilleann pipes for at least two generations. The 2nd Baron, Warner William Westenra (1765-1842) was a noted performer, as was his brother Lieutenant Colonel Henry Westenra (b. 1770), while the next generation was well represented by Henry Robert Westenra (1792-1860), the 3rd Baron Rossmore. This tradition of music underscores the unique event in the walled garden of Rossmore Park.Of the two documented sets of Uilleann Pipes in the family, one set has recently returned to Monaghan, donated by the late 7th Baron Rossmore, William Warner Westenra (1931- 2021) or Paddy Rossmore as he was more commonly known. These have been restored by local Uilleann Pipe maker, Eamonn Curran and are now curated in Monaghan Museum. Arising from the donation of his uilleann pipes to Monaghan County Museum – the musical imprint of the Rossmore family, the repertoire and anecdotes gleaned from the archives will be presented and reimagined.Harpsichord, harp and uilleann pipes featured strongly in 19th century Rossmore castle. In March 1852 "Kelly’s Quadrille' band entertained castle guests with the popular tunes of the time. In October 1858 Lord Rossmore hosted a concert in Monaghan Courthouse with the famous blind harper from Carrickmacross, Patrick Byrne. The evening’s performance will comprise of a selection of tunes submitted by Henry Robert Westenra, to George Petrie for his collection, 'George Petrie’s Ancient Music of Ireland 1855'. Petrie described Westenra, as having, "a strong love and a fine taste for Irish music’.It is with this period in mind that the musical arrangement and instrumentation has been chosen. Three local traditional songs with associations to Rossmore Park, previously lost to the oral tradition, have been added to the evening’s programme. Two pieces in particular have strong local connections: the song, 'Rossmore Demesne' and a hop-jig called 'Bríste Bréidín' also referenced as 'The Ballinode Hop'.The music has been arranged by French Baroque cellist, Luc Gaugler for seven instruments. The instruments featured are harpsichord and chamber organ (Caoimhin Vallely), harp (Laoise Kelly), flute and whistles (Cormac Breatnach), uilleann pipes (Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn), fiddle and voice (Zoe Conway), Baroque guitar (Eamonn Sweeney) and viol de gambe (Luc Gaugler)The pipes that once through Rossmore’s Halls will again ring out.
