<h3>About This Event</h3>The LAI Rare Books Group are delighted to present a repeat of last year's popular workshop with Anne Walsh, Beginning Cataloguing. Join us for a full day online workshop (10am-4pm) with comfort and lunch breaks. This workshop will be delivered online via Teams/Zoom by Anne Walsh, Beginning Cataloguing.This workshop has been certified by the <a href="https://www.libraryassociation.ie/continuing-professional-development/" title="https://www.libraryassociation.ie/continuing-professional-development/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">LAI Continuing Professional Development Committee</a>. Attendees will receive an LAI RBG Certificate which can be used to build their LAI portfolio.Advance registration is required for this event. We accept payment by invoice or payment via PayPal. For any queries please contact lairbgtreasurer@gmail.com.<h4> Introduction</h4>Some knowledge of cataloguing expected<ul><li>awareness of what cataloguing is</li><li>understanding of how catalogue metadata is structured (different fields for different types of information)</li><li>what RDA / AACR2 and MARC are</li><li>awareness that rare materials are treated differently</li></ul>This training is scoped to work for<ul><li>people who have catalogued for some time but have not catalogued rare books</li><li>people who have used catalogues that include metadata for rare books and who want to understand why rare books metadata looks slightly different from metadata for mass-published modern books.</li></ul> <h4>Schedule</h4>The workshop will begin with modern special collections and will work backwards in time. The idea is not to cover the entire History of the Book or Historical Bibliography, but to start from a practical perspective and reach the point in which we touch on the basics of Historical Bibliography. This will whet attendees' appetite to learn more through private study (reading Gaskell and Bowers) and / or attending further events (e.g. on collation of Early Modern, books not yet on ESTC / ISTC, etc.)Topics will include:<ul><li>What makes something rare?</li><li>What difference does age of manufacture make?</li><li>Modern rare books - using artists' books, limited edition and privately printed books as examples</li><li>Standards (Focus on DCRM(R) and DCRM(B))</li><li>Practice cataloguing 3 or 4 examples of modern rare books together</li><li>Older rare books - what makes them "easier" to catalogue?</li><li>Focus on reference sources (ESTC, ISTC, Jisc LibraryHub)</li><li>Practice looking up and identifying 2 or 3 examples</li><li>Older rare books - what "extra challenges" do they present?</li><li>Format and when to engage with it in practical cataloguing</li><li>Working through 1 or 2 examples together</li><li>Further sources of information / training</li></ul> <h4>About the Trainer</h4>Anne Welsh has been cataloguing professionally since 1993 and teaching others to catalogue since 1995.
