Mungret Monastic Complex and College Walking Tour

The popular festival of architecture, Open House Limerick, is celebrating its 10th year in Limerick City and County with the 2021 theme ‘Architecture is Reconnecting’. To reduce the number of large gatherings, the events will be staggered over a number of weeks with initial proceedings commencing during Heritage Week, which runs this year from Saturday August 14th to Sunday August 22nd. The Open House Limerick weekend will run from the 29th - 31st October 2021.In recognition of the isolation shared over the past 18 months, Open House Limerick 2021 will be reconnecting visitors and participants to their built heritage, local contemporary architecture and shining a spotlight on lesser known well-designed public places in their area. In addition, Open House Limerick will engage with designers and architects to commission a new pavilion as a space of reconnection.All events, which are free of charge, will either be held outdoors, self-guided or presented online.

Mungret College

&#x27;A Thousand Years a Minute&#x27; has been promised by Nessan O Donoghue, local historian, known for his work with the Mungret Heritage Society. You are welcome to join Open House Limerick on Saturday the 30th of October on our 10-year Anniversary Festival Weekend.Mungret was an early monastic site founded by Saint Nessan before 551 AD . Let Nessan (our local historian and not the monastery founder) paint the rich tapestry of history, from the multiple plundering&#x27;s to the height of the monastery&#x27;s powers. Not only will we follow the monastics complex&#x27;s history from the fifth to the 12th century, but we will also delve into Mungret College&#x27;s modern history from its establishment in 1882 until its closure in 1974. A tour not to be missed due to the potential for access to behind locked door locations and stories galore. Suitable for all ages with a level of exposure to the elements. Appropriate weatherproof clothing is recommended. Please Note: Parking in front of Mungret Community College which is fronted by a large stone portico. Failing that there is plenty of space in the overflow Mungret Park carpark just past the Community College.This project is funded by Limerick City and County Council’s Festivals and Events Grant Scheme 2021/2022.
