Samhain agus Science: Hekla Volcano (Iceland) - a Gateway to Hell?

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) conducts advanced studies exploring big questions of the 21stcentury and beyond. Its research gains insights into Celtic society and its legacy; progresses our understanding of our island, our planet and the universe; and deciphers the underpinning mathematical principles of nature.The Institute leads Ireland’s participation in a number of international and global initiatives that focus on big unanswered questions for mankind.When it was founded in 1940, DIAS was the world’s second-only institute for advanced studies – and the first such institute in Europe. For 80 years, it has pushed the boundaries of discovery and, today, it is a globally-embedded institution that attracts high-calibre researchers from all over the world in its core disciplines of Celtic Studies, Theoretical Physics, Astrophysics and Geophysics. DIAS Dunsink Observatory is a designated European site of historical significance for physics.

Samhain agus Science is an annual initiative of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies taking place each year during Halloween.

Our final day of Samhain agus Science events begins at 1pm, when Dr Martin Möllhoff of DIAS Geophysics will explain why Hekla is to this day frequently referred to as &#x27;gateway to hell&#x27;. It&#x27;s volcanic activity since the settlement of Iceland will be put into context with more recent activity during the last 100 years. Finally we explore how DIAS is contributing with seismological instrumentation to better the understanding of Hekla&#x27;s activity, and how hellish fieldwork on the mountain can sometimes be.About our SpeakerMartin studied Geophysics in Cologne, Germany and in Galway. From 1999 to 2015 he worked as Technical Officer for the Geophysics Group in University College Dublin where he also pursued a PhD in seismology which he finished in 2010. He started working for DIAS in 2015, since 2018 as Director of Seismic Networks. Throughout his career he gained extensive experience in installing and managing seismic networks, often in remote and extreme environments. Martin’s main research interests are in environmental seismology, volcano seismology, seismic network operations and microseisms.This will be an online event hosted via Zoom. Registration is required. Attendance links will be delivered via email on the day of the event.
