When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, hundreds of Ukrainian writers, poets, artists, and cultural figures voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend their homes, country, identity, and language. Those who once worked with words were forced to take up weapons.Among them is the award-winning Ukrainian poet Yaryna Chornohuz (30), who has served as a combat medic since 2021 and is now a soldier with the 140th Marine Reconnaissance Battalion.During the week of 16–20 February, on the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Yaryna will visit Ireland, sharing her unique experience as a military woman and a poet on the frontline with Irish audiences through a series of public events.On February 16, in conversation with Irish novelist and newspaper columnist Martina Devlin, Yaryna will talk about combining these two words of poetry making and soldiering in wartime.
