Féile John Ford 2026

Féile John Ford returns to An Spidéal, Co. Galway, from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September, to pay tribute to one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, John Ford, and celebrate his connection to the West of Ireland and Cois Fharraige.

Starring John Wayne as Sean Thornton, an Irish-American who returns to the village of Inisfree to reclaim his family's cottage and seek a quieter life, the film follows his romance with the spirited Mary Kate Danaher, memorably played by Maureen O'Hara. Their courtship unfolds against an idealised vision of rural Ireland, where tradition, community and family honour shape everyday life. Filmed on location in Counties Mayo and Galway, The Quiet Man transformed the west of Ireland into one of cinema's most enduring landscapes and won Academy Awards for Best Director (John Ford) and Best Cinematography (Winton Hoch). More than seventy years later, it remains the fullest expression of John Ford's Irish imagination, while its visuals, story of emigrant return and sense of place continue to influence Irish cinema while shaping how generations of filmmakers have imagined Ireland.
