RECONNECTING ORLAN WITH THE ORLANOÏDE

A very special interactive performance between ORLAN and her replica robot the ORLANOÏDE.

Imagine being able to clone yourself and exist for generations to come, or gain the ability to be in two countries at the very same time: ORLAN has done just that. Renowned for her evocative and thought-provoking works, ORLAN is a French performance artist who uses bio-hacking and technology to re-frame our perceptions of the body. In this pivotal new work created in collaboration with Science Gallery Dublin, ORLAN will join us virtually from Paris in a brand new performance through a connection between the artist and the artist’s replica: ORLANOÏDE, who will perform live from the stage in the Paccar Theatre. Over the course of a year, researchers from the ADAPT Centre at Trinity College Dublin have hacked and dissected the ORLANOÏDE to equip it with new and innovative skills that will enable it to communicate directly with ORLAN and to mimic her presence and bodily movements. This will be our final event at Science Gallery Dublin before the current model closes permanently. ABOUTORLAN is a renowned French performance artist who works in the mediums of sculpture, photography and film, and is best known for her work with plastic surgery in the early to mid-1990s. Her performance work often uses scientific and medical techniques like surgery and biogenetics. ORLAN’s artwork Harlequin’s Coat (2007) was a result of her collaboration with the SymbioticA laboratory in Australia.ORLANOÏDE is an AI robot that continues to explore themes of science, medicine and biogenetics to look at ways of examining how to reinvent bodies and selves, with a full replica humanoid of ORLAN. The ORLANOÏDE physically mimics ORLAN and questions Artificial Intelligence and new technologies that search to rebuild and reconstruct the human body. Dimitar Shterionov is an assistant professor in the Department of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, School of Humanities and Digital Sciences at Tilburg University (TiU). He is an experienced researcher in MT and NLP, an expert in a plethora of subtopics of MT such as low-resource MT, quality estimation, automatic post-editing, evaluation of MT quality and usability, speech-to-text and text-to-speech translation, etc. Dimitar obtained a PhD in Computer Science Engineering from KU Leuven in 2015 on the topic of Probabilistic Logic and Learning. Since January 2021, he has been the scientific and technical lead of the SignON project which aims to develop an automatic translation solution between signed and spoken languages.
