She is the author of the pioneering ‘On Our Knees: Ireland 1972&#x27;, twenty-four profiles of Irish people north and south, and On Our Backs (1979), profiles and interviews that charted the changing mores of the last quarter of twentieth century Ireland. Her bestselling Fathers Come First was originally published in 1974. ‘In our short life we were denounced by politicians, by bishops, by priests, by men, by women, but by the time we’d finished, every woman in Ireland had heard our clarion call. The cat, and her kittens, were out of the bag.’ The last fifty years have seen remarkable change in the rights of women in Ireland and Rosita Sweetman has not only lived through these changes but played an active part in them. A founding member of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement, the story of her life is inescapably intertwined with the fight against the deeply held, conservative views of Catholic Ireland in the 1970s and the struggle that women faced to control what happened to their own bodies. As well as telling her own story, Sweetman details the terrible treatment of women down through the centuries, as well as gleefully outlining the feminist successes that have brought about so much positive change in Ireland and abroad. Simultaneously a history of a feminist and of feminism, Feminism Backwards is a poignant and passionate book for our times.
