The State of the Nation: Ireland's Environment in 2022 | Trinity Green Week | Tuesday February 22rd 7pm

Join the Graduate Students' Union in the talk “The State of the Nation: Ireland’s Environment in 2022.” on Zoom for free.This webinar examines the present day condition of Ireland’s environment. Much of the discourse around sustainability focuses on the future, with emphasis on sustainable development goals, off-setting, carbon budgets and sectoral allocations. To protect and rehabilitate our ecological systems, we first need to understand their status. This talk is framed around the three environmental emergencies our society faces: biodiversity loss, pollution and climate change. Our guests will tackle each of these issues and outline in ordinary language the impact they are having today on our socio-natural world.Viewers will be able to participate in the Question and Answers session.Guests: Padraic Fogarty, campaign officer at the Irish Wildlife Trust, will discuss the state of Ireland’s biodiversity (marine and terrestrial) in 2022.Dr. Elaine McGoff, natural environment officer at An Taisce, will discuss pollution in Ireland in 2022.John Gibbons, journalist, will tell the story of Ireland’s carbon emissions.Dr Ciara Beausang, postdoctoral researcher at Teagasc, will discuss the role of food production in Ireland’s three-pronged environmental crisis.
