The Liquor Rooms and New to The Parish

The Liquor Rooms will be collaborating with The Irish Times – New to the Parish series to discuss the work of immigrant artists. How have they been influenced and formed by their political environments? How does an artist’s cultural identity affect their work? What challenges have they encountered bringing their work into an Irish context? Journalist Sorcha Pollak will be interviewing a panel of artists and performers featured in New to the Parish who are from a variety of artistic disciplines.
SPEAKERS
Nina Panagopoulou is a Greek visual artist from Athens with a Masters in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts. UCA Canterbury and a Bachelor Degree in Fine Art from the University of Ioannina/Greece. Nina has lived in Ireland for three and a half years, where she has produced most of her landscape work in painting. Nina is also an accomplished musician and studied classical piano and singing in Greece. She has exhibited with painting and video art in the UK, Northern Ireland and her first solo exhibition was in Belfast/Crescent Arts Centre/Dickon Hall Gallery. Nina is currently working in the Art Studio of Timos Batinakis in Athens and is a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece. 
Melanie Lan is a first generation Taiwanese-American artist currently based in the Burren. Her work navigates cross-cultural identity by playing with themes of immigration, displacement, exploration, and the reclamation of joy. Originally from Seattle, she was awarded the Blake Joseph Grinstein Scholarship and received a BA from Fairhaven College, Western Washington University. She was a recipient of the 20th Anniversary Scholarship from the Burren College of Art where she recently completed the MFA programme in 2016. She has exhibited works in the United States, Ireland, and Italy. Her practice involves painting, drawing, origami, and speaking with strangers. 
Joanna Crawley (Poland) is a Dublin based producer, dramaturg, journalist and translator and a former chief theatre critic with the leading nationwide newspaper in Poland, Gazeta Wyborcza. Since moving to Ireland four years ago (from Poland) she's work with a number of great Irish artists including: Stacey Gregg and Sophie Motley (Override), Niamh Shaw (To Space), Eccles Theatre (The Windstealers), Hugh Travers and Maeve Stone (The Big Girl), Brinkmanship Theatre (East of Berlin), Dan Bergin and Zia Holly (FUSED), Rosemary McKenna and Jane Deasy (Way to Heaven, Eurydice Project), Christina Dwyer-Hickey (Snow Angels), Deirdre Kinahan, Amy Conroy, Simon O’Connor, Gavin Quinn, Tom Murphy (various translations and representation in Poland).
Carlinhos Cruz is a Brazilian musician based in Dublin. Cruz started playing music aged 10 taking up the sounds and rhythms of the bustling city of São Paulo in Brazil where he comes from. Influenced by the diversity and textures of contemporary Brazilian music his music is a fusion of traditional Brazilian folk and haunting melodies that speak of the vivacity and complexity of contemporary living.
 
New to the Parish is an Irish Times weekly series in which newcomers to Ireland talk about the joys and challenges of their new lives. Sorcha Pollak is the chief reporter for the New to the Parish series.
The Liquor Rooms is an award-winning cocktail bar and arts venue on Wellington Quay that runs a varied programme of cultural events and have previously collaborated with the Irish Times to celebrate the anniversary of New to the Parish.
