The Glass Society of Ireland is made up of people whose interests or professions significantly relate to the specific material of glass.  Drawing from diverse creative and enterprising fields including art, design, craft, research, collecting and the historical context, we are a volunteer-run organisation whose interest in glass provides us with a mutual cause for conversation.It is the primary objective of the Glass Society of Ireland to continue to support established practitioners in Glass whilst fostering new talent. We also aim to create opportunities to communicate with each other and to engage with new audiences. This is achieved through a number of platforms: exhibition-making, holding events such as conferences, workshops and public talks, networking through social media and information distribution through our website, blog and monthly e-bulletin. Through these activities, professional connections are established both nationally and internationally.

Walk Through History in Timoleague with Finola Finlay and Friends In Timoleague it is possible to trace the history of stained glass in Ireland from the Medieval period to the 20th century. Along the way, this walking tour will cover the story of the majestic ruined Friary, the mosaic and glass glories of the Church of the Ascension, and, in the Catholic Church, the legacy of Harry Clarke and the mysterious tale of a long-lost chalice.We start in Timoleague Friary, where local historian Donal Whooley will lead us through the fascinating story of this magnificent site and we can ponder the mystery of why there is no medieval stained glass left in Ireland. From there, we walk to the Church of the Ascension, which started out as a plain and modest building but whose magnificent interior is now one of West Cork’s best kept secrets (and once prompted a riot). After refreshments, we finish the tour in the Catholic Church, built in 1912, and one of the best examples in the country of neo-Romanesque design. The three-light west window is from the Harry Clarke Studios - but who actually designed and made it? Refreshments will be served at the Church of the Ascension.Finola Finlay trained as an archaeologist and historian, excavating at Newgrange with Prof O&#x27;Kelly, and researching prehistoric Irish rock art. She excavated fur trade forts in Northern Canada and researched the history of the land-based fur trade. She spent most of her working life in Canada, however, in Higher Education administration. Now back in Ireland, she writes, with her husband Robert Harris, the arts and culture blog Roaringwater Journal (https://roaringwaterjournal.com/). She studies, photographs and writes about stained glass for her own blog and for other publications, including the Irish Arts Review and Glass Ireland.
