Join Mags Harnett, artist and art historian, as she explores the different types of artworks that came from the Big House in Ireland. What message, if any, did paintings in the Big House convey? Who were the artists who found patronage and inspiration in the Big House? Where did these artists come from, what did they depict and why? What can artwork tell us about the lives of those who occupied the Big Houses of Ireland? As valuable and portable objects, paintings were often the first to be sold when families fell on hard times; when the contents of Big Houses were dispersed, where did these artworks go? Mags will also look at the legacy of art from the Big House, how it continues to inspire artists today, and how it has contributed to the National Collection of Ireland. Mags Harnett is a practicing artist. She trained in France and has taught art appreciation in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown for several years. She sits on the guide panel and artist panel at the National Gallery of Ireland, and regularly gives tours, lectures and workshops to both schools and the public. She believes art and art appreciation should be accessible and approachable for everyone. This talk, exploring artwork and the Big House in Ireland, forms part of the programme for Shifting Foundations - The Big Houses of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, the 2021 Decade of Centenaries project from dlr Heritage.Books and prints will be available for sale on the night.
