Rethinking the ‘traumatic silence’ of the Irish Civil War

The Irish Civil War is routinely connected with ideas of trauma and silence. This lecture will tease out why the Irish Civil War is so often viewed through a lens of ‘trauma’ and how this relates to the developing ideas of psychology in Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century. Moreover, it will chart the construction of the codes of silence surrounding the Irish Civil War and explore how the overemphasis on this sense of traumatic silence has occluded the voices of the many participants who were unwilling to forget and who were determined to find ways to testify to their civil war experiences.W﻿ith ISL Interpretation &amp; Live Captioning
