Sundays at Noon concert series are held in the sculpture hall of the Hugh Lane gallery. Admission is free. Malcolm Proud - harpsichord, chamber organJohann Sebastian Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Preludes and Fugues BWV 870-893In 1722 Bach issued Book 1 of his Well-Tempered Clavier and for the past three centuries these 24 preludes and fugues have been essential repertoire for keyboard recitals and teaching. In order to mark the 300th anniversary, Malcolm Proud will play them over two recitals, each lasting about one hour and consisting of 12 preludes and fugues. He will perform them on harpsichord and chamber organ.ProgrammeJohann Sebastian Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Preludes and Fugues Nos , BWV 846-857It was an idea only Bach could have conceived: to compose a collection of preludes and fugues for keyboard, circling through no fewer than 25 major and minor keys. Bach envisioned the book as a teaching aid ‘for the use and profit of the musical youth’, but since then it has become one of the most influential works in the history of Western classical music.Malcolm Proud won first prize at the 1982 Edinburgh International Festival Harpsichord Competition. He has performed in the USA and Canada and toured Japan in a production of Monteverdi’s opera Orfeo with Mark Padmore. In 2010 he played Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos with Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s English Baroque Soloists at the London Proms and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival. He has worked with Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, European Union Baroque Orchestra and Akademie für alte Musik Berlin, and is harpsichordist and organist with Irish Baroque Orchestra. His ensemble Camerata Kilkenny has performed in Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Finland, and recorded a cd of Bach arias and Swedish folk hymns with soprano Maria Keohane. In November 2018 he curated and performed in a series of concerts at Dublin’s National Concert Hall to mark the 350th anniversary of François Couperin’s birth. His cd recordings include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 5 with both Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and English Baroque Soloists, and Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Six Partitas for harpsichord and Clavierübung 3 for organ.malcolmproud.ie
