PIER Project, NUI Galway

At this online lunchtime event, we'll review PIER project progress, highlight our future plans and answer your questions!

PIER is a research project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency that aims to support the development of monitoring strategies, regulatory activities and policy to prevent and control the spread of antibiotic resistance in the environment.
Through our Colonisation studies, we have tested 200 people who regularly swim, surf or do other in-water activities in Irish rivers, lakes and seas and 200 controls, to investigate whether regular water users are more likely to be carry superbugs in their gut. We have also tested close to 50 participants multiple times over the course of a year to see how long people carry these superbugs.
Our Blue Spaces study aimed to identify barriers to people using our natural waters and potential ways to overcome them. With your help, we have created a &quot;systems map&quot; highlighting where we can target future change interventions to maximise our use of natural recreational waters.
The PIER team, Dearbhaile, Liam, Sinead, Dzimitry, Maeve and Alex, will answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you there.
