A conversation between the winners of this year's competition

Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation

This summer, we held a translation competition for the poem 掠百年的埕過 [Through Centenary Square] by award-winning Taiwanese poet, Tēnn Sūn-tshong (鄭順聰). Translators were asked to render the poem from the Taiwanese language into English as a poem that stands on its own feet, and that draws together the poetic traditions of the two islands.A panel of judges, including poets, literary translators and language experts assessed the submissions, and picked the three translations which they felt best achieved the goals of representing the Taiwanese source text, while also fitting into the poetic traditions of Ireland. At this event, we bring together the three leading translators to discuss their approaches to translating the poem. We will start with a reading of the poem in Taiwanese by the poet. Members of the audience will be welcome to add their own questions about the challenges and issues associated with translating this poem into English.This event will take place in English. Everybody is welcome.

Tēnn Sūn-tshong (鄭順聰) pronounced as Cheng Shun-tsung in Mandarin, was born in 1976 in Chia-Yi County, Taiwan. He holds a bachelor degree in Chinese literature from the National Sun Yat-sen University, in addition to a master’s degree in Chinese from the National Taiwan Normal University. He was the chief editor of the journal &#x27;Reading Taiwan&#x27;, the executive editor of the &#x27;Unitas&#x27; magazine, as well as a Radio and TV moderator of programmes in Taiwanese. He is currently a vocational writer. Cheng has devoted himself to the promotion and preservation of Taiwanese literature and cultural heritage. His works vary from poems to novels and dramas. His most well-known works include collections of poems, such as Time table, Big laugh in black-and-white film, and I will be going.

CHANG, Yen-Jung (張晏榕) is currently a PhD student at the Graduate Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies at Fu-Jen Catholic University. She has worked as an interpreter for meetings with international partners, conferences, and business negotiations. She has many year&#x27;s experience translating documents such as immigration papers, certificates and contracts.

Daniel Rodabaugh (羅駿逸) is 30 years old, and originally from New York State. He currently resides in Philadelphia. He has worked for several years as an in-house linguist, and has also translated academic papers. He lived in Taiwan between 2014 and 2018, during which time he studied for a Master&#x27;s Degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University. Taiwan is where Daniel first became interested in translation, as well as the Taiwanese language.

WU Li-Ya (吳麗雅) has been a translator for over 12 years and thoroughly enjoys the creativity and solitude that comes with this role. Prior to becoming a translator, she studied theatre for two years in London.
