Women In Research Ireland is a group for women and other under-represented groups in research and academia in Ireland.We aim to organise events that are accessible and inclusive:We will provide physical access information about the venue on the event registration page. Women in Research Ireland (WIRI) is hosting a dedicated Women's Day 2023  event on how  support women in academia

Despite some advances, the gender difference is still a prominent topic in academia and STEM areas. Anti-discrimination policies exist, but women and minority groups remain vastly underrepresented in higher education. In particular, the under-representation of women in senior academic positions is and remains a prevalent trend in the third level sector.In WIRI, we believe and strive for institutions to adopt a more equal and socially just academic climate. This event, will examine the intersection of multiple inequalities with a specific focus on gender, age, ethnicity, and disability and open the invitation for dialogue around what it means for women to have success in higher education, challenges in career progression, strategies successfully applied in practice and the promotion of gender equality in higher education.Our speakers at this event are:<a href="https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/people/katriona-osullivan" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Katriona O'Sullivan</a>, Maynooth University. Katriona holds a PhD in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin and is Digital Skills Senior Lecturer Professor in Maynooth University. Katriona’s journey to success is inspiring; she grew up in extreme poverty, as one of 5 children in a home shaped by heroin addiction, the odds were low on Katriona making anything of her life. Lower still when she became a mother aged 15 and ended up homeless. Despite this Katriona is today an award-winning academic whose work explore barriers to education. She credits hard work, the Trinity Access Programme, and the support from community and government services on her success. Katriona leads the STEM Passport for Inclusion an award-winning project featured recently on RTE changemakers series. She teaches human development and research methods; has published research articles in journals like Nature Communications and Sustainability. Her research focuses on equality and equity in education and employment. She has worked in RCSI, Trinity College Dublin and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She has been invited speaker at the World Education Forum, and in 2021 presented to the UN and the European Gender Action Workshop on Women and Digitalization. She was also featured recently on BBC Saturday Live. Katriona has worked with Irish policy makers to develop policies around education and inclusion and has secured over 3 million euro in funding in the last 5 years to build equality initiatives. <a href="https://iadt.ie/about/staff/claire-mcging/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Claire McGing</a>, IADT Athena Swan lead and Chair of the Athena SWAN Ireland Practitioner Network. Claire McGing is the Equality, Diversity &amp; Inclusion (EDI) Manager and a member of the senior management team at the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT). She chairs the Institute’s Athena Swan self-assessment team (SAT) and Preventing Sexual Violence &amp; Harassment (SVH) Working Group and is currently sectoral chair of the Athena Swan Practitioner Network. Claire has worked on Athena Swan and EDI in the higher education sector since 2017. A social scientist and former Irish Research Council (IRC) Scholar, she has published extensive academic research on gender politics and electoral politics in Ireland. <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/helene-mihigo-ba8b2b138/?originalSubdomain=ie" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Helene Mihigo</a>, Research Scientis at Pfizer. Born and raised in Rwanda until the age of 13, Helene moved to Ireland in 2008 where I lived with my father and sister. She attended secondary schools in Meath and Dublin, later holding a BSc in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Chemistry from Maynooth University and a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from Trinity College Dublin. She is the founded of the Annual STEM conference for researchers of Black/African descent in Ireland. Before joining Pfizer, she worked in Intel as a process engineer. <a href="https://womeninresearch.ie/committee.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Valesca Lima</a> (Event chair). Valesca is Women in Research Ireland co-director and assistant Professor at Dublin City University. She specializes in governance, housing policy, political participation and social movement studies. In Women in Research Ireland, Valesca has championed the common interests of academics on precarious contracts towards the goal of sustainable careers. She was president of the Maynooth Research Staff Association (MURA) in 2018-2020 and co-founded the Irish Research Staff Association (IrishRSA), acting as the vice-president for the period 2020-2021.
