Surveillance Studies in the 21st Century: the Urgent Task of Understanding the Realities of Surveillance Today

Speaker: Professor David Lyon FRSC FAcSS, participants Dr. Ciara Bracken-Roche (MU), Professor Aphra Kerr (MU), and Dr. Dave Lewis (ADAPT Interim Director and Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin).T﻿he event will take place in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute.Surveillance studies emerged in the closing years of the twentieth century and became a transdisciplinary field in its own right, in the twenty-first, just as some contemporary global impacts of digital surveillance were themselves being realized. The burgeoning transdisciplinary field of studies addresses not only issues raised by, for instance, policing, prisons, and workplace management, but also surveillance surges prompted by 9/11 or pandemics. Global growth and diversification in surveillance are remarkable, bringing with them a larger range of issues and some specialization. At the same time, challenges such as the expanding political and economic power of platform companies raise governance issues. Present priorities include theory-and-empirical studies, dialogue between social and computing sciences, maintaining local and global networks, liaison between the academy, policy and activism, and a widening frame for the field.L﻿ight refreshments provided.Bio:Professor David Lyon is Former Director of the Surveillance Studies Centre at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Educated at the University of Bradford UK, Lyon began in secularization studies, and has been studying surveillance since the mid-1980s. A pioneer in the field of Surveillance Studies, he has produced a steady stream of books – translated in to 18 languages – and articles, starting with The Electronic Eye (1994). The latest is Pandemic Surveillance (2022). He has led several large collaborative research projects on surveillance, with research funding totalling almost $8 million. His work has been recognized in Canada, Switzerland, the USA and the UK with a number of fellowships, prizes, awards and an honorary doctorate.
