Join us for a keynote talk with Nancy Troy, author of The Afterlife of Piet Mondrian, and a talk with artist John Beattie, whose exhibition Reconstructing Mondrian at Hugh Lane Gallery deals with an architectural replica of Piet Mondrian’s original Paris studio from 1921-36, which was built by the Dutch architect Frans Postma. Troy will present a keynote lecture and discuss her work and research on Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl movement, in response to John Beattie’s exhibition Reconstructing Mondrian. 11.25am – 12.00pmTalk with John Beattie, artist. Beattie will present on the making of his work Reconstructing Mondrian, a ten year project, produced and directed by Beattie and on exhibition at the Hugh Lane Gallery till 6th August.12.00-12.30pmQ+A, discussion12.30-1pmTea/coffee and book* launch in Entrance Hall.*This book is published to coincide with the exhibition. Through film and photography, Reconstructing Mondrian deals with an architectural replica of Piet Mondrian’s original Paris studio from 1921-36, which was built by the Dutch architect Frans Postma. The book features commissioned texts by Prof. Michael White, the artist Gerard Byrne, and an in-conversation between artist John Beattie and Michael Dempsey, Head of Exhibitions at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Illustrated throughout in duotone and colour reproduction. Edited by Michael Dempsey and Meabh Delaney, designed by Peter Maybury, and printed by MM Artbook printing and Repro.B﻿iographies: Nancy J. Troy is Victoria and Roger Sant Professor in Art Emerita at Stanford University. She is the author of Couture Culture: A Study in Modern Art and Fashion, Architecture and Cubism (edited with Eve Blau), The De Stijl Environment, both published by the MIT Press, and The Afterlife of Piet Mondrian published by The University of Chicago Press, among other books on twentieth-century art and visual culture.John Beattie is a visual artist, who primarily works with video, photography, and performance, and has exhibited widely nationally and internationally. His practice has been supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, and his work is featured in public and private collections such as The Arts Council of Ireland Collection and the OPW. He is currently Artist in Residence at The National Archives of Ireland as part of the State Decade of Centenaries Programme. For more on the artist see: www.johnbeattie.ieMark O’Kelly is an artist living and working in Dublin and is the Head of the Painting Department, School of Fine Art, at the National College of Art and Design. He is a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (1992) and the National College of Art and Design, Dublin (1990). The studio-based painting practice at the centre of his work has provided the foundation, for a series of specifically conceived exhibitions and installations, which have addressed theories of representation, reproduction and quotation. Member of the Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. He has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and Europe.
