Centre for Global Women’s Studies, University of Galway in association with Teagasc &amp; Dublin City University are pleased to co-host a hybrid public lecture by Professor Bina Agarwal, University of Manchester.Date: Wednesday, May 24, 11:30 - 1:00 pm (GMT)Venue: G010, Hardiman Research Building, University of Galway, H91 REW4 or online via Zoom, link will be issued in advance of event to registered participants.Title: The case for farmer cooperation: lessons from India and EuropeHistorically, farmers across the world have cooperated in multiple ways, such as for labour sharing, machine purchase, marketing, and even joint farming. Today, however, with highly mechanised farms and globalised markets, is there still a case for farmers cooperating? Potentially, cooperation can still bring scale economies; enable cost reduction and risk spreading; and help farmers adapt to or mitigate climate change, thus promoting sustainable agriculture. What do we find in practice? Moreover, is there a gender angle, especially in developing countries, as more men move to non-farm jobs leaving women managing the farm but with insecure rights to the land they cultivate? Drawing on her extensive research in India, Europe and beyond, Professor Bina Agarwal will share insights on how cooperation among farmers could prove to be economically and socially beneficial today, not only in developing countries and also in many developed ones, even while the factors driving such cooperation may differ. Moderator:Dr Nata Duvvury, Director, Centre for Global Women’s Studies, University of GalwaySpeaker:Professor Bina Agarwal, University of Manchester Seminar Bina Agarwal is Professor of Development Economics and Environment at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester, UK. She has been President of the International Society for Ecological Economics; President of the International Association for Feminist Economics; and visiting professor at Cambridge, Harvard, and Princeton. She holds several honorary doctorates.Her over 100 academic papers and 13 books, include the award-winning book: A Field of One’s Own: Gender and Land Rights in South Asia (Cambridge University Press 1994); Gender and Green Governance (OUP, 2010) and Gender Challenges (OUP, 2016), a three volume compendium of her selected papers. Her pioneering work on gender and land rights and on environmental governance has had global impact. In 2005 she led a successful civil society campaign to make India’s Hindu Inheritance law gender equal. She is currently working on group farming in Asia and Europe.Agarwal’s many awards include a Padma Shri from India’s President; several book prizes; the Leontief Prize ‘for advancing the frontiers of economic thought’; the Louis Malassis International Scientist Prize for ‘an outstanding career in agricultural development,’ and the International Balzan Prize 2017. She is only the second woman from the Global South to win the Balzan prize since its inception in 1961. See also, www.binaagarwal.com
