About this event

7 WEEKS THROWING COURSE - ADVANCED

ABOUT THE COURSE

The Level 3 Advanced 7 weeks course is designed for those who have completed our Level 1 & 2 (Beginners/Improvers) 7 weeks course, or those who have had similar experience on the wheel.

Considered a course for advanced potters, you may work at your own pace. The course is still guided by our expert teachers who will consolidate your knowledge of throwing and give you additional skills to expand the scope of your artisanal skills. This will cover skills such as wedging, making lids, handles, spouts, and clay attachments. Please speak to your teacher in the first class if there are specific skills that you would like to focus on during the course, as they will try to accommodate you.

Where and What Time: This workshop runs for 7 evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm in our Arran Street East studio in the heart of the Dublin Fruit and Vegetable Markets area. Eircode: D07 K744 google map.

Cost: €370

If you would like to give this course as a gift please look at our Gift Cards options here.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

- Practice on your individual wheel with unlimited clay and your own wareboard. We will provide you with a wareboard, poly sheet, and a name label for your wareboard at the beginning of each course. This is to identify and wrap your work and keep it from drying out too quickly. Please take good care of your board, and respect your poly sheet, as you will need it for the duration of the course.

- A behind the scenes tour of our new professional pottery studio on Arran Street East to show how the production of pottery operates. You will preview clay sizing, pug mill, wheel throwing, drying, waxing, glazing, and kiln firing, which all take place in our studio.

- Select 3 of your favourite pieces for the final workshop session where you will glaze your own pieces in preparation for us firing them for you. We will be in touch when they are ready for collection in about 8-10 weeks after the class.

- We will also provide you with a link to our online video on handbuilding with clay, which you can do at home should you wish. You can recycle the clay from your unfired pieces as many times as you wish.

You will further develop your skills to throw pots on a pottery wheel including:

- learning to wedge and form lids, handles, spouts, and other clay attachments

- forming more challenging shapes

- designing taller pieces

You may take as many of your pots home with you as you like. Please note the pots will airdry over a few days and may then be used for display - they will not be glazed or watertight. Please bring small boxes, like Tupperware or cardboard, to bring your creations home with you.

If you would like to have extra pots glazed you might like to book into one of our 2-hour Glazing Workshops.

We really hope you will enjoy your time on the wheel as much as we enjoy teaching!

CANCELLATION POLICY

Please ensure that you, or the individual you are gifting the workshop to, can attend the workshop.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to offer refunds for the workshops. We can reschedule your workshop if you notify us 3 weeks before your workshop.

For our weekly workshops, all weekly scheduled dates are not transferable. Be sure to double-check your workshop dates before booking to ensure there are no scheduling conflicts.

FAQs

When will my pot be ready for collection? Please allow between 8-10 weeks for your pot to be ready for collection. We will email you when they are ready. Please sign your pot as instructed by the teacher. Please note, sometimes, in rare occurrences, pieces don’t survive the kiln firing and acquire damage. This is beyond any potter’s control. Should this happen to your pot, we will supply you with a blank pot which you may glaze at the workshop.

What should I wear/bring? Your clothes and shoes will get wet and dirty from clay splashes so please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting messy. Please bring your own apron and a hand towel.

Who is this course for? This pottery workshop will best suit improvers and potters with some experience looking to practice more advanced throwing techniques.

Is there an age limit for the Workshop? This course is generally for people aged 18 and above. A teenager over 15 may attend if an adult accompanies them. Please let us know in advance.

What's the day like? You will be greeted by your teacher and brought to one of our classrooms. Please let us know if you have mobility issues, so we can accommodate you in the downstairs classroom. Each participant will have access to their individual pottery wheel, workstation, and tools for the duration of the workshop. We will supply all the materials you need, but please bring your own apron and towel to keep your clothes tidy. The workshop ends with a class and equipment tidy up.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to the workshop? The nearest Luas Red Line stop is 'Four Courts', (a five minute walk away), and many bus routes service Stop 1479 on Ormond Quay, located at the junction with Capel Street. You'll also find a Dublin Bikes stand at each of these locations. Due to our City Centre location, on-street parking immediately outside the building is limited, but there is pay and display in the vicinity and a large car park nearby at Jervis Shopping Centre and beside the Fruit and Vegetable Markets.

Is my booking transferrable and what is the cancellation policy? Please check our cancellation policy.

Are there any Health and Safety issues? Please note you will be working on a pottery wheel in a bent position which might put some strain on your neck, back, or wrists. Please first consult your doctor if you have had back, neck, wrist, or any other injuries.

Please keep your hair tied up and your nails short.

Where can I contact you with any questions? You can email us at workshops@arranstreeteast.ie.

Established in 2015, Arran Street East is a pottery and weaving studio based in the markets area of Dublin city centre, where we make homewares to our own functional designs, and where our studio shop, and workshops are based. We use traditional crafting techniques to make and teach our craft, throwing on pottery wheels, and weaving on looms and frame looms. We enjoy sharing our handcrafting skills with the public through our year-round workshops and courses, and look forward to welcoming you to our studio shop and workshops.
