Brigit: Dublin City Celebrating Women is a Dublin City Council initiative dedicated to celebrating the stories and achievements of women from all walks of life, past and present, and inspiring women for the future.

Brigit 2024: Dublin City Celebrating Women

Brigit: Dublin City Celebrating Women returns from 1 - 5 February 2024 with city-wide celebrations honouring Imbolc, the Celtic goddess Brigit and all that she embodies.

'Brigid…it was she who first made the whistle for calling one to another through the night.' — Isabella Augusta Gregory, 1904 Artist Ruby Wallis will lead a night-walk through the Monto—allegedly, the biggest red light district in Europe from the 1860s–1950s. The group will embody the figure of the flâneuse, reflecting on a sense of curiosity as to how women move through and experience public spaces at night. As we stroll, participants will be invited to discover and contribute to the growing archive of whistling, a collection that has evolved as a sound work originating from the myth of Brigit whistling when she walked at night to signal her safety to others. Together we will challenge the idea of women whistling as unlucky, unfeminine, or even ungodly. Along the way, we will gather photographs of our nighttime findings and finish with a discussion reflecting on the experience of walking the city as imaginative explorers, whistlers and subverters of the gaze. Ruby Wallis is a visual artist who works with lens-based media. She lectures at The Burren College of Art. In 2022 Wallis published the Photobook A Woman Walks Alone at Night with a Camera in collaboration with writer Phillina Sun.
