The ICON Living With... series continues with a deep dive into one of Ireland's most commonly inherited diseases.

Ireland has the highest proportion of people living with Cystic Fibrosis in the world. It is our most common genetically inherited disease, primarily affecting the lungs and digestive system of over 1,300 patients in Ireland. Thankfully this once "childhood illness" now counts over half of its population as over 18, but we are still some distance from having the world-class facilities needed. New research into Cystic Fibrosis is helping us understand the challenges and providing some of the practical tools which are enabling patients to live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life. Hosted by broadcaster Ciara Kelly, this talk will delve into new research and talk to the patients who are living life with Cystic Fibrosis.LIVING WITH... is a flagship event series beginning in 2019 in partnership with ICON​ that aims to explore healthcare, the human experience and the future of disease treatment in a way that is engaging and drives the conversation. PANELBenat Broderick lives with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Benat is an Ambassador &amp; Advocate for the disease and he has always been eager to support others with the condition. He used his voice to educate the public and began speaking out on social media to discuss the illness and its challenges. As the conversation grew, he began to write articles and speak on radio and TV programmes to spread information and generate more awareness of the illness. Benat is strongly involved with the charity Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and helping to spread awareness to their national fundraising day, 65 Roses Day.Nicola Hurley is an Exercise Physiology Ph.D. student based in the School of Health and Human Performance at DCU. Her research is jointly funded by Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and the Mater Foundation. Nicola is passionate about the ‘exercise is medicine’ phenomenon and aims to develop a home-based, technology-driven, CF-specific exercise intervention, with the patient at the heart of her research.Padraic Fallon is the Professor of Translational Immunology in Trinity College. Fallon’s research is on translational immunology, bringing studies in the laboratory and also on patients with inflammatory diseases. Fallon was a Wellcome Trust Fellow in the University of Cambridge, is a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, a member of the Royal Irish Academy and has been awarded a Doctor of Science from the University of Wales. He is an opinion leader on the preclinical development of therapeutic strategies for inflammatory diseases. Fallon has made a number of fundamental discoveries in immunology, reflected in over 20 years of publications in the leading international scientific journals. In 2018 he was one of three scientists in Ireland that were ranked in the top 1% of immunologists in the world.MODERATORCiara Kelly Is a journalist and broadcaster on Irish radio. She is the presenter of Lunchtime Live on Newstalk. She also has a weekly column with the Irish Independent.
