All welcome to attend. <h3>About the Event</h3>Title: &quot;The challenge of the integrity of food and its supply chain actors&quot;Presenter: Presenter Saskia van Ruth is the Professor Food Authenticity and Integrity at Wageningen University. Abstract:Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the authenticity of food products and considerable efforts have and are being made by the food industry to guarantee the integrity of food supply chain networks. There are challenges but also many developments which help to ensure the integrity of foods which will be discussed in this presentation.There has been considerable emphasis on detection methods. However, if we wish to move from detection to prevention we need to understand the motivation factors that influence food fraud and in turn work out plans to address vulnerabilities. Understanding why people engage in food fraud helps to pinpoint the weakest spots in our food supply chain networks and provide directions on how and where to apply our latest detection technology to address food fraud/integrity issues efficiently.

About the presenter:Saskia van Ruth is Professor of Food Authenticity &amp; Integrity at Wageningen University and Professor of Integrity of Food Supply Networks at Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland and affiliated with University College Cork as adjunct professor. She deals with food integrity issues on a daily basis.After having taken her PhD in food chemistry at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, she worked on flavour science in industry and the academic world for nine years. She carried out flavour research in University College Cork from 1998 till 2005. In 2005 she returned to the Netherlands and took up the position of head of the food authenticity and nutrients group at RIKILT Wageningen University and Research, where she still works part-time today. She was appointed as professor on food authenticity/integrity in Wageningen in 2012 and in Belfast in 2018. As adjunct professor she continues to be connected with UCC.

This public event is part of a collaborative UCC-Teagasc-Musgrave research project “Protecting Irish Agri-food Chain Integrity”. This project supports a Walsh PhD fellow to explore the policies and practices required to protect “Brand Ireland”, including Irish food exported and consumed domestically.
