A fun few days of paddling and on-the-water instruction for adults who want to learn the basics of kayaking with qualified Canoeing Ireland instructors, followed by an assessment trip.(date & location to be confirmed depending on the group)
This course also includes :
- Level 1/2 Kayak Award assessment
- Membership of Laois Kayak & Canoe Club
- Membership of Canoeing Ireland
Dates:
- Sat 22nd June & Sun 23rd June from 09:30 to 16:00 each day with a luch break
- Assessment trip location tbc, most likely the following weekend depending on the progress of the group & availability of assessors.
What you will learn:
- To kayak safely & competently on flat water
- An understanding of the Basic Paddling Techniques and Safety Rules of canoeing
- An ability to Enter and Exit a kayak correctly
- Forward Paddle, Reverse Paddle, and Stop
- An ability to turn while stationary using Forward Sweep Stroke, Reverse Sweep Stroke and a combination of Sweep Strokes
- Simple Draw Stroke
- Low Brace
- Turning on the Move & Edging
- Capsize Drill
- An ability to carry out an Assisted X Rescue
- Fundamentals of River Safety & Rescue
What we supply:
- Kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid, helmet, spray-deck (and all the instruction to get you paddling!)
What you need to bring:
- Wetsuit (or old tracksuit–top and bottom, T-shirt or rash vest) (avoid cotton if possible), Adequate footwear (old runners are perfect), Windcheater, Towel, Change of Clothes
- A full expectation of getting wet and being immersed in the water
Pre-requirements:
- You must be able to swim 10 meters and be 18 years of age or older
Course Numbers:
- Group sizes are limited to a maximum of 12 persons

Laois Kayak and Canoe Club is a member of Canoeing Ireland. All our courses are operated as per Canoeing Ireland's training structures and safety guidelines. This course is of an introductory level and operates under the guidance of qualified Canoeing Ireland Instructors on grade 1 water.
Once beginners have reach a level of competence, they are welcome to become club members and take part in club activities including participation in further training, river trips, national competitions and events.
