Sensory Integration and An introduction to DIR for Adults with Autism and/ Intellectual Disabilities Study Day

About this event

The Adults with Intellectual Disability Special Interest Group are delighted to host the following two speakers:

Nita Desai, Senior Occupational Therapist, St. John of God Kerry Services. An Introduction to Sensory Integration. Nita has advanced qualifications in sensory integration therapy.

Nita will provide an overview of sensory integration, with a specific focus on adults with intellectual disabilities. She will also give some practical ideas about how to identify sensory processing difficulties, and how we can work to support a person’s sensory needs.

Dr. Gil Tippy, ICDL. An Introduction to DIR with Adults with Autism and/ Intellectual Disabilities.

DIR is the Developmental, Individual-differences, & Relationship-based model. DIR provides a foundational framework for understanding human development and outlines the critical role social-emotional skills have on overall human development starting at birth and continuing throughout the lifespan. It also provides a framework for understanding how each person individually perceives and interacts with the world differently. The model highlights the power of relationships and emotional connections to fuel development.
