Event description
Alternating Current is Dublin’s new city festival curated by Dublin Digital Radio to show Ireland’s other music traditions.

About this event

Alternating Current is Dublin Digital Radio's inaugral festival of new music and sound art taking place both on the online radio station's own platform, and at The Complex's Gallery space.

The festival will feature new radio specific work broadcast on Dublin Digital Radio from Tuesday October 26 and intimate performances in The Complex’s Gallery Space over the Hallowe’en weekend (October 30 and 31), along with some late night dancing at a venue close to the city centre on Saturday October 30.

This October Dublin Digital Radio celebrates its fifth year broadcasting. In that time it has come to occupy a unique position in Ireland’s music hinterland. As a radio platform that thrives on giving space to experimenters, artists and producers, the station has become a home to some of the most compelling work being made both in Ireland and by its emigre axis.

Alternating Current is our attempt to curate some of this magic into a new city music festival. AC is an expression of what happens when scenes coalesce, overlap, and support one another.

Our inaugural festival is a celebration of the networks that converge on ddr., an ode to the airwaves as a space of commune and solidarity during crisis, while also being a response by the station to a wide range of artists that are each exhaustive experimenters in their own right.

We commissioned sixteen of these artists to make new work and we are delighted to have them perform it over the duration of the festival.

RESTART is Alternating Current's opening concert. The concert will be livestreamed on listen.dublindigitalradio.com

Line Up

Aonghus McEvoy

Aonghus McEvoy is a composer and improviser based in Dublin. He explores the spaces between composition and improvisation, oblique restraint and histrionic rock excess. Aonghus' work moves between collaborations with improvisers, indeterminate scores for small ensembles and skewed takes on folk idioms. He has performed alongside musicians such as Rhodri Davies, Annette Krebs, Jon Collin, Ludo Mich, Damo Suzuki, David Maranha, Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh, Tristan Clutterbuck, Ricardo Jacinto, David Lacey and worked with composers such as Jack Callahan, Jorge Boehringer, Conal Ryan and Eva-Maria Houben.

Sharon Phelan

Sharon Phelan is an artist, writer and musician specialising in digital media and sound. Her practice researches resonance and poetics of place, often in site-responsive and collaborative projects. She is currently working on a series of sonic artefacts and scores that incorporate archival aesthetics and field recording. These draw on past sites of radical potential, while speculating on the relationship between myth and history. www.soundsweep.info

Jane Deasy

Jane Deasy is a composer of electronic and electroacoustic music. With both digital and analogue synthesis, she generates unique microtonal tuning systems to create intricate textures and harmonies. These minimal, harmonic structures often result from ‘sonic excavations’, revealing inaudible layers of recorded material and acoustic space. Jane’s performances implement specifically designed digital instruments for the live processing of psychoacoustic responses.

Working across forms of multimedia including performance, installation, and theatre she has designed sound and music for productions at The Gate Theatre, The Gaiety, The Lyric Theatre, and Project Arts Centre.

Other upcoming performances include a commission from Dublin Sound Lab to collaborate with cellist, Ilsa de Ziah, to compose a new electroacoustic work which will premiere in November as part of the contemporary music festival, Music Current.
