Baking in Space

Cork Science Festival offers the opportunity to engage science at multiple levels. Our 2021 program includes numerous workshops and shows available to visit primary and post primary schools, a fun series of afternoon and evening events & exhibitions, libraries and public spaces anchored by two weekends of family science shows. All this activity and excitement make Cork Science Festival one of the main partners of Science Week Ireland and one of the biggest events in the Irish science calendar. Cork Science Festival runs from Saturday 6th to Sunday 14th November 2021.

‘Baking in Space’ returns to Science Week 2019 with a one night only Cork date.

‘Baking in Space’, the sell-out show of Science Week 2018, with space explorer, Niamh Shaw and Great British Bake Off finalist, Andrew Smyth lands in Cork on Wednesday November 13th as part of Cork Science Festival.How can a retro dessert explain how astronauts safely return to Earth?What connects molten sugar and micro-meteorite protection?How would you even bake bread in space?British Council Ireland are delighted to bring a national tour of ‘Baking in Space’ to Science Week 2019. Working with Galway and Cork Science Festivals, the sell-out family event will be presented at The Black Box theatre, Galway, KINO in Cork and returns to Smock Alley Theatre for two Dublin shows. With local Irish researchers and special guests from the European Space Agency, together they will explore the surprising connections between everyday bakes and the extraordinary engineering that helps keep astronauts alive in space.With lots of live demonstrations, tasting and audience interaction, your curiosity will be whisked, stirred, and taken out of this world…About Andrew Smyth:Andrew Smyth is an engineer, baker and presenter who gained a nationwide following for his outrageously engineered creations when he reached the final of BBC’s The Great British Bake Off in 2016. He divides his time between Aerospace research, presenting events and contributing to TV, radio &amp; online features. He has toured his live “bakineering” show around the UK and has even baked a rotating jet engine cake for Prince William. Constantly curious, he is inspired by flying machines of all sorts and has dreams of becoming a science broadcaster. About Niamh Shaw:Award winning science communicator, Dr Niamh Shaw is an engineer, scientist, performer and explorer of all things space and makes theatre shows about her mission to get to space. She has participated in a simulated Mars mission in the Utah desert, experienced microgravity on a Zero G parabolic flight and is the artist in residence at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory. A regular on TV and radio, she has spoken internationally &amp; presented her work at ESA’s cultural event, Spacerocks Live!, at Wired UK Live!, New Scientist Live!, World Science Festival and more. She is delighted to be working for the fourth year running with British Council Ireland for Science Week. ‘Baking in Space’ is a Science Week 2019 event funded by Science Foundation Ireland and created in partnership with British Council Ireland, Dr Niamh Shaw and Andrew Smyth. It is kindly supported by Yakult who have themselves gone to space, doing experiments with astronauts on the International Space Station on further uses for their unique Lactobacillus casei Shirota bacteria!
